Earlier, on January 17, the French Senate passed a resolution supporting Armenia's territorial integrity and calling for sanctions against Azerbaijan in connection with its military operations in Karabakh in September 2023.
According to AzerNews , Azerbaijani lawmakers consider the French Senate resolution to be "biased, one-sided, and unfounded."
The committee's statement read: "Due to the anti-Azerbaijan policy pursued by the French government, including resolutions passed by both houses of its parliament against our country, relations between the two countries are at their lowest point in history and can essentially be considered suspended."
Accordingly, the agency called for freezing all assets of French officials if they were included on the list, expelling all French companies, and prohibiting them from participating in any projects undertaken under state direction.
The document also emphasizes that "the steps taken by the French government, as well as the Senate and National Assembly, are aimed at hindering the implementation of the peace agenda between Azerbaijan and Armenia, as well as the escalation of tensions in the South Caucasus region."
Azerbaijan also accused Paris of trying to prevent the signing of a peace treaty between Baku and Yerevan.
France has not yet commented on the move by the Committee on International Relations and Inter-Parliamentary Relations of the Azerbaijani Parliament.
Relations between France and Azerbaijan became strained in mid-September 2023 after Baku accused Paris of showing a "biased" stance and providing significant political and military support to Armenia. Armenia and Azerbaijan are both involved in territorial disputes with Azerbaijan in the Nagorno-Karabakh region.
In late December 2023, Azerbaijan expelled two French embassy staff members for activities deemed inappropriate for their diplomatic status. Paris immediately retaliated by demanding that two Azerbaijani diplomats leave France.
