On August 16, Tien Giang Provincial People's Committee coordinated with the Propaganda Department of Tien Giang Provincial Party Committee to organize a scientific seminar to commemorate the 160th anniversary of the martyrdom of National Hero Truong Dinh (August 20, 1864 - August 20, 2024), with the theme: Historical imprints of Truong Dinh Uprising in the resistance movement against French colonialism in the second half of the 19th century.
Speaking at the workshop, Mr. Nguyen Van Vinh, Chairman of Tien Giang Provincial People's Committee, said that for the people of Tien Giang, the indomitable example and steadfast fighting spirit in the struggle against the French colonialists in the 1960s of the 19th century of National Hero Truong Dinh is a great source of motivation for generations of cadres, soldiers, armed forces and people in the province to continue to fight bravely for the independence and freedom of the nation, for the cause of building and defending the Fatherland; to devote their efforts and intelligence to building the homeland of Tien Giang to become increasingly prosperous, beautiful and civilized.
Promoting the heroic tradition, since the country's reunification, Tien Giang Party Committee has led the people to restore and develop the socio-economy, effectively implementing policies and resolutions, especially the Resolution of the 13th National Party Congress, Resolution of the 11th National Party Congress of Tien Giang Province, achieving very important results.
Economic growth rate is quite good; economic structure is shifting in the right direction. Infrastructure and socio-economic infrastructure are invested in; competitiveness and business investment environment are improved. At the scientific conference, leaders of agencies and units under the Ministry of National Defense, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences, Military Region 7, Military Region 9; scientists, researchers; delegates from Quang Ngai province - the hometown of AHDT Truong Dinh - discussed to continue affirming the stature, historical significance and great contributions of the Truong Dinh Uprising in the resistance war against French colonialism in the second half of the 19th century.
General of the Western Region - Truong Dinh was born in 1820 in Tu Cung commune, Binh Son district (now Tinh Khe commune, Son Tinh district, Quang Ngai province).
At the age of 24 (1844), he followed his father to the South, got married and started a business in Go Cong (in Tien Giang province). In 1854, Truong Dinh recruited poor people to establish Gia Thuan plantation. He was appointed by the Nguyen Dynasty to the position of Deputy Quan Co, then Quan Co and participated in fighting foreign invaders with the royal army, achieving many feats.
In 1862, the Nguyen Dynasty signed the Nham Tuat peace treaty, handing over the three eastern provinces to France, ordering Truong Dinh to withdraw troops and take up the position of Commander in An Giang.
At the request of the people and the patriots, Truong Dinh refused the court's order and accepted the title of Binh Tay Dai Nguyen Soai, continuing the fight against the French. On August 20, 1864, the French suddenly surrounded and attacked the insurgents, Truong Dinh was seriously injured. Not letting himself fall into the enemy's hands, he drew his sword and committed suicide to preserve his heroic spirit.
