Generalissimo of the Western Pacification Army, Truong Dinh, was born in 1820 in Tu Cung commune, Binh Son district (now Tinh Khe commune, Son Tinh district, Quang Ngai province).
At the age of 24 (in 1844), he followed his father south, married, and established a life in Go Cong (in Tien Giang province). In 1854, Truong Dinh recruited poor people to establish the Gia Thuan plantation. He was appointed Deputy Commander, then Commander, by the Nguyen dynasty and participated in fighting foreign invaders alongside the imperial army, achieving many victories.
In 1862, the Nguyen dynasty signed the Treaty of Nham Tuat, ceding three eastern provinces to France, and ordered Truong Dinh to disband his troops and take up the position of Commander in An Giang.
At the request of the people and the patriots, Truong Dinh refused the imperial court's order and accepted the title of Grand Marshal of the Western Pacification Army, continuing the fight against the French. On August 20, 1864, the French unexpectedly surrounded and attacked the patriotic forces, and Truong Dinh was seriously wounded. To avoid falling into enemy hands, he drew his sword and committed suicide to preserve his heroic integrity.
