Horror movies open new directions

No longer simply relying on shocking images, jumpscare techniques or twists, horror films have continuously made their mark in recent times, not only in the number of films released in theaters but also in revenue records.

More importantly, this film genre is increasingly showing diversity in storytelling and theme exploitation. Films such as Linh lich: Quy nhap trang, Ma da, Nha gia ancestor, Den am hon, Ke han hon ... take care of folk cultural materials, from worship beliefs to local legends. Some works belonging to the "five-element supernatural universe" (including Ma da, Quy nhap trang, Tim xac ) are also built from true stories, creating closeness. Most recently, Tim xac: Ma khong dau has just been released in theaters and has attracted attention when focusing on exploiting the depth of the characters' psychology, especially the hidden corners of their inner lives. The ending, although not too surprising, is still enough to evoke emotions in the audience thanks to its emphasis on maternal love and human love.

It is easy to see a clear shift: Vietnamese filmmakers are leaning towards spiritual and psychological elements, instead of following the old formula. The atmosphere of fear is maintained by a slow, suggestive narrative, giving the audience space to imagine and contemplate. The intention of many filmmakers is to evoke emotions, touch the subconscious to create empathy instead of simply causing fear. Some films are even considered "poetic" - making viewers both shiver and cry. This direction helps horror films escape clichés, delving into human nature - where the greatest fear sometimes does not come from supernatural forces but from within each of us. However, this also places higher demands on the quality of scripts and acting.

As horror films gradually escape from their “niche” to become a popular genre in the Vietnamese market, audiences are also starting to demand more: from depth of content, cultural values to creativity in expression. If they are not brave enough to break out of the rut, boldly go beyond their comfort zone and experiment with new directions, this genre of film is at risk of falling into a state of saturation - a trap unintentionally created by filmmakers themselves. That challenge is always present - and is also a problem that needs more creative solutions.
