Specialist Doctor I Hoang Vinh Ha, Professional Director of Hanoi - Dong Nai Eye Hospital (Tam Hiep Ward, Dong Nai Province) said: Endophthalmitis is the most serious complication of Phaco surgery. Symptoms are severe eye pain, redness, swelling, and rapid loss of vision a few days after surgery. The cause is infection caused by bacteria entering during or after surgery. Therefore, the surgical process must ensure strict sterility. At the same time, use antibiotic eye drops before and after surgery, and instruct patients on proper post-operative care.

The next complication is increased intraocular pressure after surgery with symptoms of headache, eye pain, blurred vision, and increased intraocular pressure. The cause is due to inflammatory reaction, drainage obstruction, and prolonged use of corticosteroids. To prevent this, it is necessary to closely monitor intraocular pressure after surgery and adjust medication accordingly for each patient.

After Phaco surgery, patients may also have complications such as macular edema (blurred vision, especially when reading or doing close-up work). This is caused by fluid leakage in the macular area from the post-operative inflammatory reaction. To prevent this, good post-operative inflammation control is needed, especially in patients with diabetes or previous eye surgery.

Another common complication is displacement or misplacement of the artificial lens, resulting in blurred vision, double vision, and glare. The doctor will treat this by surgically repositioning the lens.

According to Dr. Hoang Vinh Ha, on average, each month, Hanoi - Dong Nai Eye Hospital performs about 300 Phaco surgeries for patients in and outside the province. The rate of patients with post-operative complications is quite rare due to the thorough examination process. For each patient, the doctor will ask about the disease to detect risk factors such as glaucoma, diabetes, uveitis... From there, give indications and choose the appropriate artificial lens for each patient.

Peace
