On May 16, Japanese Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi and his Philippine counterpart Enrique Manalo agreed to strengthen security cooperation amid complex security challenges in the Indo- Pacific region.
Following talks between the two ministers in Tokyo, Japan's Foreign Ministry said the two sides also agreed to promote trilateral cooperation with the United States. In addition, the two sides welcomed progress in the transfer of Japanese defense equipment to the Philippines.
Last April, Japan decided to provide equipment to the armed forces of like-minded countries to enhance their defense capabilities within the framework of Official Security Assistance (OSA).
Japan plans to provide the Philippines with coastal surveillance equipment in fiscal 2023.
