On August 28, in Washington DC, within the framework of a visit and work in the US, Deputy Minister Hoang Trung and the delegation of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development had a working session with Deputy Minister Hafemeister and representatives of relevant agencies of the US Department of Agriculture.

The visit of Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Hoang Trung aims to accelerate the opening of markets for some fruits that Vietnam has export advantages; strengthen cooperation between the two ministries in the field of plant protection; promote technical cooperation and investment in sustainable agricultural production and emission reduction.

At the meetings, both sides expressed their joy that American peaches/nectarines were allowed to be exported to the Vietnamese market; at the same time, important steps were made in accessing the market for some other fruits of the two countries.

The two sides agreed to conclude technical discussions and move on to legal procedures to allow the import of Vietnamese passion fruit; initiate the review process for new Vietnamese products, including seedless lemons, guavas, and jackfruit; and agree on the pest list and next steps in the review process for tangerines, plums, lemons, pomegranates, and other products for US plant varieties.

Deputy Minister Hafemeister said that the US has never had such a close cooperative relationship with any partner in the region, and pledged to further strengthen technical cooperation, improve the capacity of the two countries' management agencies in disease control, risk analysis and research and development, apply new initiatives, and improve crop varieties.

To support the maintenance of growth momentum and market share of Vietnam's agricultural, forestry and fishery products, Deputy Minister Hoang Trung expressed his hope that the US Department of Agriculture will have an appropriate voice in the consultation process related to trade defense cases against Vietnam's agricultural, forestry and fishery products, specifically for timber, warm-water shrimp and honey.

Your side acknowledged the commercial role of these products in stabilizing farmers' livelihoods and the legitimate interests of Vietnamese enterprises.

Regarding the application of new measures in the field of animal and plant quarantine, the two Deputy Ministers discussed in a spirit of cooperation and openness the existing legal system; agreed on the general principle of compliance with multilateral international trade commitments of which both sides are members, in accordance with domestic laws but still promptly updated with new trends in trade, production and disease management for animals and plants.

The US side also pledged to continue supporting Vietnam in implementing projects in fertilizer management, biological pesticides and rice production in the Mekong Delta.

The two sides also shared their views on developing green, environmentally responsible agricultural production, joining hands to ensure global food security, thereby affirming that they will strengthen cooperation and mutual support in implementing global initiatives on smart agriculture, adapting to climate change, and being environmentally friendly.

Regarding additional measures and improvements to plant quarantine procedures, the US side acknowledged Vietnam's proposals on diversifying plant quarantine measures to reduce costs and facilitate trade between the two countries, and affirmed that it will continue to closely coordinate and carry out necessary testing activities to give a final opinion.

The two sides also agreed to deploy measures to disinfect dry goods in containers at import ports. The US also pledged to support Vietnam in converting to using electronic phytosanitary certificates (ePhyto).

Deputy Minister Hoang Trung and the delegation had an open dialogue with the US-ASEAN Business Council.

Here, Deputy Minister Hoang Trung witnessed the signing ceremony of a cooperation MOU between Cargill US and Khai Anh Binh Thuan Company (Vietnam) to import 500,000 tons of corn and corn meal for domestic animal feed production.

This is one of the practical activities to harmonize the bilateral trade balance between Vietnam and the US, while helping to diversify the import market for raw materials for Vietnam's animal feed production.
