The closing day of the 2024-2025 school year at Nam Cha Primary Boarding School for Ethnic Minorities (Nam Nhun district, Lai Chau province) was more bustling than usual.

Parents and students eagerly went to school, some on motorbikes, some on carts, together to the warehouse to receive rice to take home. After signing for it, the parents loaded the bags of white rice onto their vehicles to take home.

According to Mr. Pham Quoc Bao, Principal of Nam Cha Primary Boarding School, this is the amount of rice that has not been used up in the support program under Decree 116/2016 for students in extremely difficult areas. Each student is given 15 kg of rice per month, during the 9-month study period.

This school year, Nam Cha Primary Boarding School has 360/555 students benefiting from the policy, with a total of 48.6 tons of rice. However, the students only used more than half of it. The remaining rice is nearly 21.6 tons, the school decided to divide it equally, 60kg/student.

"Although the amount of leftover rice for each student is different, after discussing and getting the parents' consent, I decided to divide it equally among the students to ensure fairness and convenience for distribution," Mr. Bao shared.

Mr. Ly Van Sam, representative of parents of students at Nam Cha Primary Boarding School, expressed his joy when receiving the rice support: "My family has two children going to school, so we received 1.2 tons of rice. This amount of rice is enough for a family of 5 to eat for about 2 months," said Mr. Sam.

According to Mr. Sam, the parents in the village were very excited. Everyone happily carried the rice home, no one intended to sell it but all appreciated this meaningful support. The amount not only helped reduce some of the burden on the students' families, but also demonstrated the school's transparency, sharing and responsibility in managingeducational support policies in the highlands.

Sharing about the redistribution of unused rice to students, teacher Pham Quoc Bao said: "I just did my job, I haven't been able to help students and parents much."

Thanks to many years of experience organizing boarding schools, Mr. Bao calculated the specific food rations for students: each child eats about 1.55-1.6 taels of rice per meal. In addition to the rice provided by the State, students are also supported with about 936,000 VND/month. The school uses this money to organize more diverse meals.

"Receiving the rice and the unused support money, all students and parents were happy. Seeing that joy, I also felt happy," Mr. Bao shared. Before returning to Nam Cha, Mr. Bao was the Principal of Nam Manh Primary Boarding School for more than 10 years. Here, he also returned the remaining support rice to students and parents at the end of the school year.

Nam Cha Primary Boarding School has 99% of students from ethnic minorities, most of whose families are still facing many difficulties, and the risk of dropping out of school is always present. Many times, teachers have to travel to the village, to each house to persuade and welcome students back to class, making daily efforts to maintain the number of students and increase the attendance rate.
