According to Newsweek, the Russian military has retaken about 120 square kilometers of territory since October, including 65 square kilometers over the weekend alone. Currently, about 660 square kilometers of Kursk Oblast remain under VSU control, while another 360 square kilometers are considered a “gray zone.”

Analysts note that in August, at the height of the VSU offensive, the Ukrainian army captured about 900 square kilometers of territory, with another 330 square kilometers remaining in neutral territory. However, the Russian army's active counteroffensive has led to significant changes on the Kursk front line.

The Russian army has made particularly significant advances in the Korenevsky district, where Moscow is said to have recaptured settlements such as Tolstoy Lug and Novoivanovka. In addition, under the “Rybar” project, the Russian army has regained control over Olgovka, Pokrovsky, Zeleny Shlyakh and Nizhny Klin. In the Lyubimovka district, the Russian army has surrounded the VSU units, causing great difficulties for the Ukrainian forces.

Also on October 16, expert Andrei Marochko - retired Lieutenant Colonel of the self-proclaimed Lugansk People's Republic (LPR) said that the Russian army currently controls more than 99% of the LPR's territory.

According to Mr. Marochko, fighting is taking place in the Svatovsky area, Kremennoye district and Lisichansk. He noted: “We need to hit these three areas hard to completely liberate the LPR territory.”

Earlier in the day, the Russian Defense Ministry announced that it had taken control of the settlements of Nevskoye in the LPR and Krasny Yar in the DPR (self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic). The statement stated: "Units of the Central Group of Forces have liberated the village of Krasny Yar in the DPR."
