Caring for the health of the meritorious

The generation of fathers and brothers sacrificed for the independence and freedom of the Fatherland so that today's young generation can live in peace. They are symbols of patriotism, resilience and indomitable will of the Vietnamese people. With deep gratitude, in recent times, the activities of caring for and protecting the health of people with meritorious services have received special attention from all levels and sectors in the province.

In 1965, when he was just 22 years old, Mr. Vu Dinh Huong (Kim Tan ward, Lao Cai city) enthusiastically joined the army. After training, he went to the South and fought in the Quang Ngai battlefield. After a period of fighting, he was injured. In 1971, Mr. Huong went to the North to recuperate and transferred to work in Lao Cai. As a war invalid and suffering from the after-effects of chemical toxins, due to his old age and weak health, Mr. Huong is often sick and has to be treated at the Provincial Rehabilitation Hospital. Recently, he also suffered a stroke, which greatly affected his motor function. The staff and doctors of the Provincial Rehabilitation Hospital have long been familiar with the image of patients in green shirts, always unhurried and optimistic. Mr. Huong shared: "I was very satisfied when I went to the hospital for treatment. The medical staff were enthusiastic and dedicated, not only actively treating me but also visiting, encouraging, and caring for me a lot."

The Provincial Rehabilitation Hospital has been caring for and treating many veterans, wounded soldiers, and sick soldiers like Mr. Huong. The efforts of the medical team in caring for and treating people with meritorious services are concrete actions with the hope of compensating for some of the losses and sacrifices that previous generations have gone through.

Among the patients currently being treated at the Provincial Rehabilitation Hospital, there are also female patients who are frontline workers. With the humane policy of the State, they are granted health insurance cards as meritorious people, and are examined and treated for free at public health facilities within the scope of health insurance. Ms. Le Thi Sang (Pho Rang town, Bao Yen district) is one of them. Having just finished the acupuncture treatment, Ms. Sang took the time to share with us about her decision to join the frontline workers in 1979 and the 15 days and nights of carrying food and clearing roads. The memories came back as if it were yesterday, making Ms. Sang somewhat emotional. This time, the back pain relapsed, making it difficult for her to move around, so she had to go to the hospital for treatment. Ms. Sang confided: “After 3 days of treatment and rehabilitation exercises, my pain has decreased a lot. Thank you to the doctors and nurses who have treated me wholeheartedly and encouraged me.”

The Provincial Rehabilitation Hospital has become one of the prestigious examination and treatment addresses for those who have contributed. Veteran patients who come for examination and treatment often have disabilities in motor function, speech, language or other disabilities. They are screened, have paraclinical tests so that doctors can make a diagnosis and appropriate treatment regimen, bringing about effectiveness in rehabilitation activities, and are also given detailed instructions on nutrition and exercise regimens, responding to treatment.

Doctor Do Minh Hoan, Director of the Provincial Rehabilitation Hospital, affirmed: With the spirit of "all for the sick", the hospital always welcomes and cares for sick people, especially those with meritorious services, with the best conditions, while providing quality medical services and advanced techniques to reduce the consequences of war, contributing to improving the quality of life for those with meritorious services.

In addition to medical care, the Provincial Rehabilitation Hospital also focuses on the psychology of patients, regularly organizing exchange activities, encouraging the spirit of patients in general and those with meritorious services in particular. The social work team of the Provincial Rehabilitation Hospital has organized meetings on anniversaries, organized the program "Singing forever the marching song" to show gratitude, give gifts and exchange arts, bringing joy to those with meritorious services, a great source of spiritual encouragement.

Caring for the health of people with meritorious services is a humane policy of the Party and the State. In 2024, districts, towns and cities in the province will purchase health insurance cards for people with meritorious services, relatives of people with meritorious services and people participating in the resistance war according to regulations. More than 20,000 health insurance cards have been issued, ensuring that 100% of people with meritorious services enjoy health insurance benefits according to regulations. Medical facilities all implement priority in medical examination and treatment for people with meritorious services.

Along with that, every year, Lao Cai province pays attention to organizing nursing sessions for people with meritorious services. At the Sa Pa Nursing Center for People with Meritorious Services (opened in 2012) with modern facilities, people with meritorious services receive health care, participate in cultural activities and are taken care of by a team of doctors, nurses and medical staff in every meal and sleep, closely monitoring their health and psychology.

Taking care of the health of the meritorious is not only a social security policy, but also an extension of the tradition of “remembering the source of the water you drink”. This is not only the responsibility of the health sector but also of the whole society to have more voluntary medical examination and treatment programs, visits, gift giving, and medical equipment support... for the meritorious are the beneficiaries.

When the community joins hands in caring for and protecting the health of those with meritorious services, seeds of kindness will be planted and spread so that the younger generation can be passed on gratitude, continue the tradition of patriotism, and build a humane and affectionate society where those with meritorious services are always respected and cared for.
