Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani on June 1 reiterated his opposition to Ukraine's use of Italian weapons in Russia, warning of a delicate situation that required avoiding "hasty" actions, AFP reported, citing local media.

Many NATO member states are increasingly in favor of allowing Ukraine to use Western-funded weapons to strike inside Russian territory. But Italy, a founding member of the transatlantic military alliance, remains opposed.

“This is a very delicate moment, we must not take wrong steps” and must avoid “hasty steps and statements,” Antonio Tajani said at a meeting in Rapallo, northwest of the country, according to Italian news agencies AGI and ANSA.

“Even the United States did not allow the indiscriminate use of weapons against Russia, but only attacked a base from which the drones were launched. They were also very cautious,” AGI quoted Foreign Minister Tajani as saying.

Mr Tajani also said that Italy would send another aid package to Ukraine within “a few weeks”. But he reiterated that “we will not send a single Italian soldier to fight in Ukraine because we are not in conflict with Russia”, according to the AGI news agency.

Germany said on May 31 that it had allowed Ukraine to fire German-supplied weapons at targets in Russia. A day earlier, on May 30, US officials said Washington had partially lifted similar restrictions to allow Ukraine to defend the Kharkiv region on the border with Russia.

Amid the escalating Russia-Ukraine conflict, Poland and its allies scrambled their aircraft early on June 1, in what Warsaw said was a response to Russia's intensive long-range aviation activity.

“We warn you that Polish and allied aircraft have been activated in Polish airspace, which may cause increased noise levels, especially in the southeast of the country. In the early hours of June 1, intensive long-range aviation activity of the Russian Federation is being observed,” the Polish Armed Forces’ Operations Command said in a post on X at 4:17 a.m. Moscow time (1:17 a.m. GMT - 8:17 a.m. Hanoi time).

Three hours later, the Polish Armed Forces' Operations Command reported that its aircraft had returned to base. The Polish Air Force last scrambled fighter jets on May 26.

The Russian Defense Ministry has repeatedly affirmed that flights of Russian fighter jets strictly comply with international regulations on the use of airspace .
