Báo Dân tríBáo Dân trí25/08/2023

Hoang Hoa Tham (1858-1913), better known as De Tham, was a prominent figure in Vietnamese history in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

As the leader of the Yen The uprising that took the French colonial government a lot of effort to suppress, De Tham received great public attention in terms of military, political , personal life, and life.

De Tham - The Glorious Era was jointly published by Nha Nam and the French Institute on the occasion of the 110th anniversary of De Tham's death.

The book, originally titled L'homme du jour. Le De Tham (The Contemporary. De Tham) , was published in 1909 in Hanoi. This is one of De Tham's early, topical documents about the military confrontations between the French government and the Yen The army.

The author is Maliverney, editor of the newspaper Tuong Lai Bac Ky (L'Avenir du Tonkin).

De Tham - The Glorious Period includes 3 main contents: Introduction to the origin, biography of De Tham and his activities before 1909; Articles and telegrams sent from Yen The by reporters of the Northern Future newspaper; Some reports and memoirs of the 1909 battle in Yen The.

In the eyes of the French, Yen The was an inaccessible area, full of hidden dangers and difficulties. The insurgents and the people of Yen The were people who were difficult to surrender to. De Tham was truly a "sacred tiger", appearing and disappearing, impossible to subdue.

During the translation process, Nha Nam encountered many difficulties in editing the exact names of places or people. This information was recorded by the French author, often keeping the original Vietnamese transcription without accents, sometimes based on memory or narration, so it cannot be considered absolutely accurate.

In addition, De Tham's area of operation was very large, including Bac Giang , Thai Nguyen, Lang Son, so the place names/personal names also had many units such as villages, hamlets, villages or districts, which have now changed or no longer exist after many administrative reforms.

"We have tried to look up and edit the place names/person names as accurately as possible and are aware that there may still be errors in many places. Some place names/person names cannot be looked up, so the publisher decided to leave the original transcription intact," Nha Nam said.

Translating and publishing this book, Nha Nam hopes that De Tham - The Glorious Period is a valuable collection of documents for readers who want to learn more about the French perspective on De Tham.
