Reviewing preparations ahead of the 46th ASEAN Summit

On May 24, in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Deputy Foreign Minister Do Hung Viet attended the ASEAN Senior Officials' Meeting (SOM) in preparation for the 46th ASEAN Summit and related Summits.

At the meeting, the countries sent their deepest condolences to the Party, State and people of Vietnam on the passing of formerPresident Tran Duc Luong, and expressed their appreciation for the former President's contributions to the region and ASEAN during the first years of Vietnam's participation in ASEAN.

As planned, from May 26-27, the 46th ASEAN Summit and related Summits will take place at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Center, with the participation of leaders of ASEAN countries, Timor-Leste, Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries and China.

With about 10 sessions, the Leaders will discuss in depth the directions and measures to strengthen intra-bloc cooperation, expand connections with partners, enhance economic self-reliance and seek new cooperation drivers in the context of the volatile regional and international situation.

One of the highlights of this Summit was the signing of the Kuala Lumpur Declaration by ASEAN Leaders on “ASEAN 2045: Our Common Future” and the adoption of the ASEAN Community Vision 2045 along with political -security, economic, socio-cultural and connectivity strategies.

These will be comprehensive and overall guiding documents, creating a solid foundation for regional connectivity in the next two decades. In addition, many documents are being urgently completed to be submitted to ASEAN Leaders and partners for consideration, approval and acknowledgement.

Appreciating the preparations of the host country Malaysia, the Heads of ASEAN SOMs affirmed that they will continue to closely coordinate to ensure the Conferences are successfully organized and achieve many practical results. Also at the meeting, Deputy Minister Do Hung Viet and the countries discussed many important contents related to the process of building the ASEAN Community, supporting Timor-Leste to become an official member of ASEAN, implementing specific cooperation between ASEAN and its partners and improving the effectiveness of ASEAN-led mechanisms.

On the same afternoon, authorized by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son, Deputy Minister Do Hung Viet attended the expanded informal consultation meeting on the implementation of the 5-point consensus on Myanmar, and listened to a report on the work of the ASEAN Chair's Special Envoy on Myanmar in recent times.

The Deputy Minister highly appreciated the efforts of the Special Envoy and Chair of ASEAN 2025, affirmed that Vietnam closely coordinated with member countries to implement the 5-point Consensus and proposed a number of measures to improve the effectiveness of implementation in the coming time.

On May 25, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son will lead the Vietnamese delegation to attend the ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting (AMM), the ASEAN Political-Security Community Council (APSC) Meeting, the ASEAN Coordinating Council (ACC) Meeting and the ASEAN-GCC Foreign Ministers' Meeting.
