Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra Takes Stunning Photos of Earth from Above

In a groundbreaking feat of technology and innovation, Samsung took smartphone photography to the next level by sending the Galaxy S24 Ultra into the stratosphere via a hot air balloon to capture the images. The extraordinary effort resulted in a series of breathtaking images of Earth from above, showcasing the beauty and majesty of our planet from unique angles.

To demonstrate the powerful camera capabilities of its latest flagship phone, Samsung attached four Galaxy S24 Ultra mobile phones to four stratospheric balloons to capture the magnificent scenery of the American West.

Samsung reportedly used special lightweight carbon fiber frames to secure four mobile phones to each balloon flying in the stratosphere. The mobile phones were also mounted on custom 3D gimbals, and they were controlled by a computer mounted on the balloon to take photos from different angles and directions.

The balloons were launched from four locations including Los Angeles, Las Vegas, the Grand Canyon, and the Sierra Nevada between January 25 and 31. Samsung said it did this to “capture a variety of landscapes and test the S24 Ultra’s photography capabilities.”

Finally, the four mobile phones flew to an altitude of 36.5 km above the ground. From this height, the cameras of the devices could easily capture the curvature of the Earth. The 200 MP main camera, 12 MP ultra-wide camera and 50 MP 5x telephoto zoom camera on the Galaxy S24 Ultra proved their mettle, capturing more than 150 stunning photos of the Earth from above. These images provide a mesmerizing view of our planet, highlighting diverse landscapes, vivid colors and intricate details with unparalleled clarity.

After taking the photos, the crew released the hydrogen and lowered the parachute, allowing the balloon to slowly descend to the ground at a speed of 8 km/h. Although the Galaxy S24 Ultra did not go into outer space, its journey into the stratosphere allowed it to capture images far beyond the capabilities of conventional photography. From this high vantage point, the smartphone lens captured the curvature of the Earth, the vastness of space, and the complex interplay of light and shadow on our planet’s surface.
