The water level of the Red River may rise as hydroelectric reservoirs release floodwaters due to heavy rains in the coming days.

According to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, from the morning of July 3, in the mountainous and midland areas of the North, there will be moderate rain, heavy rain and thunderstorms, locally very heavy rain; rainfall is generally from 30 - 70mm, locally over 120mm.

The Northern Delta region (including Hanoi) will have scattered showers and thunderstorms, locally heavy rain; rainfall from 15 - 30mm, locally over 60mm. Warning level of natural disaster risk due to heavy rain, tornadoes, lightning, hail: level 1.

Heavy rains are expected to change water levels in the hydropower reservoir system, especially the Hoa Binh and Tuyen Quang hydropower reservoirs. This could affect the safety of dams and the downstream area of the Red River, including the Hanoi capital region.

Deputy Chief of Office of the National Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control Nguyen Van Tien said that to proactively respond to natural disasters in the coming days, the Prime Minister has issued Official Dispatch No. 65/CD-TTg on proactively responding to heavy rains in the Northern region.

Currently, the National Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control is requesting localities to organize on-duty shifts, monitor weather developments, provide timely forecasts and warnings to local authorities and people; at the same time, deploy measures to respond to heavy rains and ensure downstream safety when releasing floodwaters from the two Hoa Binh and Tuyen Quang hydropower reservoirs, minimizing possible damage.
