In Bloomberg 's Power On report, analyst Mark Gurman said Apple is preparing to enter the low-cost laptop market, aiming to compete with Chromebooks and Windows PCs with a more affordable version of its Mac.

Specifically, the new device, codenamed J700, is aimed at users who mainly browse the web, work on documents or do light media editing. This version of the Mac is expected to cost less than $ 1,000 .

Gurman revealed that the low-cost Mac will have the same processor as the iPhone and a lower-end LCD screen. If this information is correct, this will be the first time Apple has used an A-series processor in a Mac, instead of the M-series chips designed specifically for computers.

Despite the lower performance, internal testing has shown that the iPhone chip can still perform well. In fact, Gurman added, the A-series chip is more powerful than the Mac-optimized M1 chip used in versions a few years ago.

In addition to being cheaper, this version of the Mac will have better battery life and flexibility, and will come with the macOS operating system. Bloomberg, citing internal sources, said Apple plans to launch this low-cost version of the Mac in the first half of 2026.

Apple accounted for about 9% of the global PC market in the third quarter, ranking fourth behind Lenovo, HP and Dell, according to IDC. A cheaper version of the Mac that still maintains Apple's design language and works seamlessly with other products in the ecosystem could drive a wave of new users, especially in the US, where the iPhone dominates.
