In Document No. 119/TTr-BNNMT-CNTY dated July 30, the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment said that the pig farming industry currently accounts for about 62%-65% of total fresh meat output, with output in 2024 reaching about 5.2 million tons - ranking 6th in the world. The average pork consumption per capita in Vietnam in 2024 will reach 37.04 kg of meat/person/year, ranking 4th globally.
Raising pigs in a biosafety direction in Xuan Loc district, Dong Nai province. |
Faced with the reality that small-scale livestock farming still accounts for a large proportion, making it difficult to ensure biosafety, causing the outbreak of African swine fever in the 2019-2020 period, destroying more than 9 million pigs and causing losses of more than 30 trillion VND, the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment believes that it is necessary to switch to a modern, sustainable model.
Currently, two enterprises, BAF Vietnam Agriculture Joint Stock Company and Xuan Thien Thanh Hoa Joint Stock Company, have proposed implementing a model of pig farming in high-rise buildings. In particular, BAF Vietnam cooperates with Muyuan Group (China) to implement a 6-storey livestock complex project in Tay Ninh, with a scale of 64,000 sows, producing 1.6 million pigs per year. The project has a total investment of more than 12,000 billion VND, with an expected annual revenue of 12,000-13,000 billion VND after full operation.
China is currently a pioneer country with more than 2,000 models, nearly 4,500 high-rise pig farming buildings, providing about 30 million pigs each year. This model shows many outstanding advantages such as saving land, labor, shortening land clearance time and increasing land use efficiency up to 4.3 times compared to traditional farming.
Through international practical research, the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment assessed that the multi-level pig farming model can ensure strict requirements on biosafety, reduce emissions, effectively treat waste and improve economic efficiency.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Environment has proposed that the Prime Minister allow the implementation of this model in Vietnam in the coming time.
