SK Group wants to be assigned to invest in LNG power projects with capital scale of 10 billion USD

SK Group (Korea) has proposed developing three specialized energy-industrial clusters (SEICs) in three regions, with the main focus being LNG power projects with a total investment scale of more than 10 billion USD.

Specifically, according to the proposal of SK Group, the North Central AI Specialized Industrial - Energy Cluster will be located in Nghe An and Thanh Hoa; the South Central "E-Logistic" SEIC Cluster will be located in Ninh Thuan and the Mekong Delta Energy - Agriculture SEIC Cluster.

In the North Central AI Specialized Industrial - Energy Cluster, SK Group plans to develop this place into a high-tech energy and industrial center.

Here, a Nghi Son - Quynh Lap integrated LNG power project will be built and operated with a total estimated investment capital of about 4.1 billion USD, including two LNG power plants with a capacity of 1,500 MW in Nghi Son and Quynh Lap. There will be an onshore LNG station in Quynh Lap as a shared infrastructure for both power plants with a capacity of up to 2.4 million tons/year.

Other infrastructure includes LNG import ports, breakwaters, and supporting infrastructure for LNG imports.

Estimated land requirement is 424 hectares, of which the inland part is about 88.6 hectares and the sea surface is about 334.95 hectares.

In the future, SK also proposed to build an additional 1,500 MW power plant in Thanh Hoa in this area.

Energy from the project will be used to develop an AI data center near Nghi Son Power Plant with an area of about 10,000 m2.

Also in this area, distributed energy resources (DER) will be developed in Thanh Hoa to integrate renewable energy sources and energy storage systems (ESS), ensuring continuous and efficient power supply.

In Ninh Thuan, SK Group’s proposal includes the development of the 1,500 MW Ca Na LNG power project and a 240,000 m3 LNG station along with related technical infrastructure with an investment capital of about 2.4 billion USD. The land requirement for the project is about 143 hectares and the sea surface is 232 hectares.

In the long term, it is also proposed to develop an additional 1,500 MW power plant in Ca Na, raising the total investment capital to about 4 billion USD.

Nhon Trach 3&4 Power Plant is the first LNG power project built in Vietnam.

SK also hopes to develop Ninh Thuan into an LNG logistics center. This LNG logistics center will focus on three main areas: fuel supply services; agricultural and aquatic logistics through the deployment of cold storage and distribution systems, using the super-cold properties of LNG and infrastructure for transporting natural gas by truck.

It is also expected to deploy small modular reactors (SMRs) for nuclear power development. SK is currently the second largest shareholder of Terra Power, a leading US-based SMR technology developer, and is also keen to cooperate to establish technical, institutional and commercial frameworks for SMR deployment.

In addition, Ninh Thuan also develops a distributed energy source system (DER).

At the Mekong Delta Energy-Agriculture SEIC Cluster, SK proposes to consolidate the region's leading agricultural advantages while ensuring energy for future growth.

There will be a 1,500 MW LNG Ca Mau 3 Power Plant located in Khanh An Industrial Park (near the existing Ca Mau 1 & 2 Power Plants); a floating storage and regasification facility with a capacity of 180,000 m3 on Hon Chuoi Island (Ca Mau).

In the long term, SK also proposed adding a 1,500 MW LNG power plant, raising the total investment capital to 2.5 billion USD.

The Mekong Delta region will also develop agricultural logistics systems, agricultural centers and multi-purpose energy stations; develop distributed energy source systems and develop green hydrogen.

Other proposals by SK are to leverage SK's LNG investment assets in the United States to supply US LNG to Vietnamese power plants operating after 2030, contributing to improving the trade balance between Vietnam and the United States.

To implement this plan, SK Group also proposed to appoint itself as the investor of projects including Nghi Son - Quynh Lap LNG Power Plant and LNG station; Ca Na LNG Power Plant and LNG infrastructure; Ca Mau 3 LNG Power Plant and 02 additional LNG power plants in Thanh Hoa and Ca Na. The total investment scale of these LNG power projects will be more than 10 billion USD.

SK Group is a multi-industry economic group in many fields such as energy, chemicals, telecommunications, information technology, semiconductor products, and materials. The group has 200 subsidiaries, with a market capitalization of nearly 200 billion USD, ranking second in Korea. Last year, the group recorded a revenue of more than 150 billion USD.

In Vietnam, SK Group has invested about 3.5 billion USD in a number of corporations and projects producing environmentally friendly biodegradable materials...
