The family of Mr. Tong Van Quoc, in Phong village, Nam Lanh commune, has an orange garden of more than 1 hectare, over 5 years old, has been harvesting for 2 years now, with a yield of 6 tons of fruit. Mr. Quoc said: Currently, the orange tree is in the stage of bearing young fruit, the family is focusing on pruning branches, hoeing the soil around the base and fertilizing. Pests and diseases can appear at any time, so I am often present in the garden to check and handle them, not to affect the growth of the tree. Hopefully, with favorable weather, this year's orange crop will have a higher yield than last year.
Nam Lanh Commune has 144 hectares of fruit trees of all kinds, mainly oranges, grapefruits, longans, grafted mangoes, with an output of nearly 340 tons of fruit per year. Every year, the commune has mobilized people to improve hilly land and garden land to grow fruit trees; created conditions for households to participate in training courses on technical advances; applied technical advances in planting and caring for trees according to VietGAP processes, and introduced new high-yield, high-quality varieties into production. Since the beginning of May, the commune has coordinated with the District Agricultural Service Center to support farmers with techniques in caring for fruit trees during the fruit-setting period; and propagated farmers to pay attention to pest control in order to achieve a high-yield, high-quality crop.
With more than 30 hectares of oranges, tangerines, and grafted mangoes, the products of Toan Duyen Agricultural Cooperative, Sop Cop Commune, are recognized as meeting VietGAP standards, with an average harvest yield of 75 tons of fruit per year. Mr. Tong Van Toan, Director of the Cooperative, said: At this time, to avoid rapid drainage during hot weather and reduce weeding, the Cooperative has used tarpaulin to cover the roots and provided technical advice to farmers on planting and caring for fruit trees using organic methods to improve product quality. This year, the Cooperative strives for a yield 10-15% higher than last year.
According to the orientation to 2030, Sop Cop district strives to plant about 3,500 hectares of fruit trees, concentrated in the communes of Muong Va, Muong Lan, Dom Cang, Sop Cop, Nam Lanh, Pung Banh. The main fruit trees include mango, longan, orange, tangerine, pineapple, plum, grapefruit and other temperate fruit trees.
To achieve this goal, the district has stepped up propaganda, mobilization, and guidance for people to apply breeding techniques, advanced farming techniques, water-saving irrigation, flowering techniques, and mechanization in production. Strengthening the application of organic production processes; applying grafting, pruning, and canopy shaping techniques. Since the beginning of the year, the district's Agricultural Service Center has opened 8 training courses for 560 farmers on cultivation techniques and pest control on fruit trees.
From 2020 to present, the district has implemented 15 models and projects to replicate fruit tree development models on 186 hectares, with 458 households supported with over 250,000 seedlings of various types, over 152 tons of fertilizer, and 4 water-saving irrigation systems. According to the assessment, the fruit tree development models are basically effective, many newly planted areas have yielded stable harvests and generated income, improving land use efficiency compared to other crops. Through the implementation of models, the project has also contributed to increasing the fruit tree area from nearly 600 hectares in 2020 to over 1,800 hectares in 2025, with an output of over 3,000 tons; of which, 51 hectares meet VietGAP standards, 10 hectares are granted planting area codes.
Mr. Tong Van Cuong, Director of the Agricultural Service Center of Sop Cop district, said: The Center recommends that people follow safe production processes, use fertilizers and pesticides on the permitted list; prevent anthracnose on fruit stalks in grafted mangoes and stem borers in perennial citrus fruit trees. For citrus fruit trees, when young fruits reach a diameter of 1 cm or more, it is necessary to prune the number of fruits on the tree to match the age of the tree, and remove bad fruits. For grafted mangoes, longans and other fruit trees, after 3-4 weeks of fruit set, it is necessary to fertilize and cover the fruit with specialized bags to prevent fruit flies, fungi and fruit diseases.
With the proactive care of fruit trees, timely application of science and technology in production by farmers, and the support of professional agencies, we believe that this year's sweet fruit season in Sop Cop district will achieve high yields, create quality products, and contribute to increasing people's income.
