A post shared a screenshot from the broadcast of the Pacquiao-Barrios boxing match. The post claimed the draw was unfair and cited boxing expert Larry Hazzard’s scorecard, which showed Pacquiao had the edge over his Mexican opponent.
According to the Philippine online newspaper Rappler , the reason they verified the information was because this TikTok post attracted more than 4 million views, nearly 240,000 likes, more than 3,000 comments and more than 14,000 shares.
The post highlighted the scorecards for round 9 of 12, where Hazzard had Pacquiao ahead 77-75 over Barrios. This created a lot of controversy online, with many believing Pacquiao deserved to win.
Rappler said the post was just one of many using screenshots questioning the fairness of the majority tie decision.
However, Rappler clarified: Larry Hazzard was not an official judge or referee for this match. The scorecard he created is for reference only.
The official result was determined by the three judges: Tim Cheatham and Steve Weisfeld scored the bout a draw (114-114), while Max DeLuca gave Barrios the win 115-113.
Thus, this match ended in a majority draw, Barrios still retained the WBC welterweight championship, and Pacquiao only narrowly missed out on victory in his return to the ring.
The unofficial scorecards in the posts belong to Larry Hazzard, a commentator with many years of experience in boxing, refereeing and officiating major events.
He often uses a 10-point scoring system for each round, which is standard in professional boxing.
Hazzard is a member of the commentary team for Primer Boxing Champions on Prime Video Pay Per View in the US, providing live commentary during fights.
Since the score he assigned does not affect the official results, the scorecard in the post is misleading and does not reflect the official judge's decision.
Pacquiao - the 8-weight world champion, at the age of 46, failed to win the WBC welterweight title after a majority draw with Barrios, 16 years his junior. Initially upset by the draw, Pacquiao later said he was "satisfied" with his performance.
