The fourth-generation Suzuki Jimny has been on the market since 2018 without any significant changes. However, that hasn't stopped the compact SUV from becoming a beloved icon in many parts of the world . Now, as the compact SUV approaches its seventh birthday, speculation is growing about a mid-life facelift. According to new reports from Japan, Suzuki is expected to launch a mildly facelifted version of the Jimny in August 2025. However, the changes will be modest, focusing mainly on technology rather than design.
Specifically, the Suzuki Jimny 2026 will be equipped with the latest active safety system (ADAS) called Suzuki Safety Support, similar to the 5-door version called Jimny Nomade that was just introduced in the Japanese market earlier this year. According to information from Creative Trend, the upgraded version of this small SUV will have an automatic emergency braking system with dual cameras and a traffic sign recognition system with a pause feature. For versions with a 4-speed automatic transmission, the car will be supplemented with driver assistance features such as reverse brake assist, rear cross-traffic alert and adaptive cruise control. These additions will significantly expand the ADAS package, which was very limited before on the Suzuki Jimny.
In terms of design, the 2026 Suzuki Jimny is expected to remain the same. This will not affect much because Jimny lovers are usually off-road enthusiasts and they do not care too much about whether the car has a new appearance or not. Japanese media said that Suzuki also has no plans to launch a special edition of Jimny in this update. The reason stems from the fact that the company is still struggling to deal with a huge backlog of orders, especially for the Jimny Sierra for the international market and the 5-door Jimny Nomade. Previously, Suzuki received 50,000 orders for the Jimny Nomade in just 4 days of sale, equivalent to about 3.5 years of production. Customer demand is so high that Suzuki has had to temporarily stop taking orders for the 5-door Jimny in the Japanese market. It is likely that the 2026 Suzuki Jimny will not have any changes in terms of engine. In the Japanese market, the domestic version of the Jimny still uses a 3-cylinder, turbocharged, 660cc engine to comply with kei car regulations. Meanwhile, the Suzuki Jimny Sierra and Jimny Nomade continue to use a 4-cylinder, naturally aspirated, 1.5L engine.
In the European market, Suzuki has started to launch special editions to “say goodbye” to the Jimny, further indicating that an updated version of the car may be near. If it integrates hybrid or mild hybrid engine technology, the company could bring the passenger version of the Jimny back to Europe. Previously, the company only sold the car as a two-seat cargo van (LCV) because of emissions regulations. Meanwhile, plans for a fully electric Jimny have been scrapped. Last year, Suzuki president Toshihiro Suzuki said the car would continue to use a conventional internal combustion engine while the company focused on researching alternative fuels. That means the Suzuki Jimny EV that was proposed for the European market will not be realized.
