Reuters reported that Syrian officials accused Israel of carrying out an airstrike near Aleppo airport on March 22, causing damage and shutting down the airport, while regional intelligence sources said the attack appeared to have hit an Iranian weapons depot.

This is the third attack on Aleppo airport in the past 6 months. The Syrian Defense Ministry said that Israel is believed to have launched missiles from the Mediterranean Sea at the airport area.

The attack has put the airport out of action and the Syrian government is repairing the structure, said Bassem Mansour, head of Syria's civil aviation authority.

Two regional intelligence sources said the raid appeared to have hit an underground ammunition depot near Nairab military airport.

According to Reuters , over the past year, pro-Iranian militias in Syria appear to have expanded their influence in Aleppo province.

Israel has not commented on the accusations from Syria.

Israel regularly carries out strikes in Syria, mostly against targets it accuses of being linked to Iran - the Jewish state's arch-rival in the Middle East. Since the Syrian civil war broke out in 2011, Israel has carried out hundreds of strikes in Syria, according to AFP.

Israeli airstrikes in June 2022 shut down Damascus airport for two weeks. Two months later, Israel also carried out two airstrikes on Aleppo airport.
