Let the audience control the space
LKLK group consists of 12 students majoring in Multimedia Communications, gathered and trained by Mr. Vu Phuc An. The group's orientation is to carry out art stage projects, with the opening performance being the radio play Chi Pheo.
Sharing the reason for choosing the radio drama genre, the representative of the LKLK group said: "According to the group's research, currently most forms of art and entertainment are visual, very few forms of communication are conveyed through sound, and storytelling through sound is even rarer." In addition, LKLK is also a pioneer group in bringing the art of foley (creating realistic sound) to perform live on stage, combined with traditional musical instruments.

Starting relatively safely with the literary masterpiece Chí Phèo, the LKLK team understood that the biggest challenge was how to think about sound to create an artistic space like the words did. It was not simply a matter of expressing dialogue with many nuances of voice, but also required carefulness in each word, the pauses between sentences and the harmony of sound effects.
Therefore, to allow the audience to freely feel, contemplate and summarize the story, the LKLK group does not try to orient or send any profound or novel message into the work. Instead, they choose a special perspective, a common voice to bring the audience into the space of the story.
As with the radio play Chí Phèo, the construction of the narrator as a villager helped the audience feel and understand everything that happened as if Chí Phèo were present in front of them. The play also attracted attention when the person who played Chí Phèo’s voice was American director Aaron Toronto, who had been successful with the film Dem toi splendor. To express the voice for this role, Aaron learned how to express the old Northern accent and even tried to find the feeling of being “drunk” to understand the emotion when Chí Phèo received the bowl of onion porridge from Thị Nở.
The representative of the organizing committee said that although the casting stage for the main role encountered many difficulties because of not finding the right person, the production team was still persistent and determined not to change the criteria to ensure the quality of the work.
If you want to go far, you must stay close.
As soon as he assembled the LKLK team, director Vu Phuc An invited many experienced people in the fields of script writing, sound design, stage production, etc., to share their knowledge with the members. After more than 4 months of serious study, the group began to build the play Chi Pheo.
Despite the support and guidance from the teacher, each member still had to figure out how to make each sound prop or each line of the script. Although this proactive way of working had many difficulties and even took a lot of time, it helped the members maximize their creativity and flexible improvisation.
As with recreating the sounds of life, due to lack of experience in creating sounds, the group encountered many difficulties. For example, when creating the sound of rain, the group initially used a plastic bottle and a few pebbles, but the feedback from the audience who listened to the test was not good, so the group changed it to a transparent plastic tube longer than 1 meter, inside were hundreds of small bamboo sticks connected together and twisted like a DNA chain, the pebbles were also replaced with rice, the sound of rain now became thicker and more even.
Other sounds such as rooster crowing, birds singing, thunder... are all the result of a painstaking process of creation and experimentation. The requirement is not only to sound like real life sounds but also to match the dialogue to create the most realistic space for the audience.
The positive response from the audience after the official performance of the radio play Chi Pheo confirmed the success of the LKLK group with this new genre. Boldly finding their own direction and remaining loyal to their principles from the beginning, the group of young students has grown from the comments, changes and determination to build a place in the hearts of the audience. In other words, in order for their story to be accepted, the LKLK group chose to persevere with familiar values and develop step by step.
In the near future, the LKLK group plans to perform the play Chi Pheo at many schools to spread this new art to students. At the same time, the group also cherishes the idea of releasing an audio version so that audiences far away can easily access and enjoy it.
Besides young people, the radio play Chi Pheo also features famous artists such as: Meritorious Artist Pham Huy Thuc plays the role of Ba Kien, Meritorious Artist Dinh Linh performs traditional musical instruments such as flute, flute, percussion... creating an emotional sound space.
