Take advantage of the 'golden time' during recess to reduce school violence

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên01/11/2023

When students have "nothing to play"

During recess (about 30 minutes), many students just sit around and the long-term consequence is that they are lazy to move. There are conflicts and disagreements that lead to school violence, mostly stemming from recess because students "have nothing to play with".

Therefore, if schools know how to take advantage of the "golden time" during recess, they will achieve many educational goals for students.

To create an effective "playground" during this "golden hour", schools need to organize continuous, rich activities through many forms according to the themes of the school year and depending on the conditions of each school.

For example, schools can organize for clubs to do school radio programs ( musical gifts, birthday greetings, radio broadcasts on monthly themes during the school year).

Students prepare for the plays themselves, such as writing literary scripts, composing theme music, performing stage performances, and selling tickets...

Teachers can organize physical competitions such as group jumping rope, mini soccer, tug of war, flash mob dancing... Schools can organize book presentation competitions, introduce good books to students at the library.

School counselors should also take advantage of recess to discuss urgent issues for students in their studies and mental health.

Most schools are wasting recess time, but some are making efforts to organize meaningful activities for students.

For example, at Hoang Van Thu Primary School (Tan Binh District, Ho Chi Minh City), every year, the school arranges recess time for many months of the first semester to organize sports activities to celebrate November 20.

During that time, students eagerly waited for recess to cheer so the school yard was always bustling during recess.

Promoting the role of clubs in schools

At Tay Thanh High School (Tan Phu District, Ho Chi Minh City), the School Union takes advantage of most of the break time to organize activities. The most exciting is the group rope jumping in the first semester and the flashmob competition in the second semester.

Obviously, these competitions attract students to participate for many months. In addition, the school's Youth Union and subject groups also organize other activities such as propaganda radio broadcasts, birthday gifts, modern dance, and technical creativity competitions (physics, chemistry).

Mr. Pham Van Cuong, Vice Principal of Tay Thanh High School, said that the school's policy is to create all conditions for students to participate in activities and play during recess, helping them to be agile and active, avoiding passivity and sluggishness, and boldly integrating with new trends in society.

"Therefore, in addition to the emulation movements organized during recess, the school also takes advantage of this time to promote the role and skills of clubs such as: radio and media clubs; sports and modern dance clubs; art clubs; book clubs at the library... Attracting students to participate in activities will help limit conflicts that lead to student violence," said Mr. Cuong.
