(CPV) - On November 3, police in the Valencia region, an area that has been severely affected by flash floods in Spain, advised residents to stay home as the National Meteorological Agency (AEMET) issued a red alert for a new round of heavy rain.

The advisory comes after rain began falling in Valencia. According to AEMET, this new spell of rain could see up to 9cm of rain fall within an hour.

King Felipe VI, Queen Letizia of Spain, along with Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez and local leaders visited the Valencia region in the east of the country on November 3 to assess the situation, urge relief efforts, and encourage rescue workers and victims of severe flooding early last week.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said this was the worst flooding the country had seen in this century. The Spanish government is now mobilizing a lot of resources to help overcome the consequences of the flood disaster.

Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has ordered the mobilization of 10,000 soldiers and police to help the affected areas. In the first 48 hours after the floods, Spain “deployed the largest number of armed forces and police ever seen in peacetime,” Pedro Sanchez said.

So far, rescuers have carried out 4,800 rescues and helped more than 30,000 people in flooded homes, roads and industrial zones. However, rescuers have had to wait too long to reach blocked and flooded homes, garages and isolated villages.

A year’s worth of rain fell on eastern Spain on October 29, destroying roads and causing rivers to overflow, causing a huge loss of life. Valencia was the worst-hit area in the disaster. Thousands of homes were flooded, infrastructure was destroyed and transport was paralyzed, while locals faced mounting hardships due to lack of clean water, electricity and food.

According to the Spanish government, electricity supply has been almost completely restored in the affected areas, while telecommunications lines are expected to be restored by the end of this week. Officials also urged people to stay at home to avoid causing traffic jams that could hinder rescue efforts.

As of November 3, the death toll from flash floods in the Spanish regions of Valencia, Castilla-La Mancha and Andalusia has reached 217, with many still missing. Local authorities warn that the death toll could rise as many vehicles remain trapped in tunnels and underground car parks, many people are still missing and the exact number is unknown due to damaged communication systems.

This is considered the worst flood disaster in Spain's modern history, and meteorologists say climate change is making such extreme weather events more frequent and more destructive./.
