In an interview with NBC News on January 14 in Tehran, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian affirmed that his country never planned to assassinate US President-elect Donald Trump, while rejecting previous statements from Washington on this issue.

In November 2024, the US Department of Justice indicted an Iranian man in connection with a plot to assassinate President-elect Donald Trump, accusing Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) of planning and directing the plot. US law enforcement thwarted the plot before any attack could take place.

During his campaign for the most powerful seat in the United States in 2024, Mr. Trump also claimed that Iran could be behind attempts to assassinate him.

However, President Pezeshkian affirmed, "this is just one of the plots that Israel and other countries have created to promote fear of Iran. Iran has never and does not intend to assassinate anyone."

Additionally, when asked if Tehran was willing to pledge that it would never attempt to assassinate Mr. Trump, President Pezeshkian stated: “We have never tried to do this and we will never do it.”

This is the first time Mr. Pezeshkian has given an interview to international media since the US presidential election (November 2024).

Last year, Mr. Trump survived two assassination attempts during his campaign: One at his golf course in West Palm Beach, Florida, in September and another at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, in July.

The US government said this was an Iranian plot to avenge General Qasem Soleimani, who was killed in Baghdad in a drone strike ordered by Mr. Trump during his first term as President.

However, in mid-October 2024, Tehran sent a written message through Swiss diplomats , affirming that it would not seek to assassinate Mr. Trump.

Tehran has also repeatedly accused Washington of interfering in its internal affairs for decades, from the 1953 coup to the 2020 drone assassination of an Iranian military commander.
