According to the decision from the District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia on April 17, Google's actions are said to have caused serious harm to advertising and marketing intermediaries (publishers), eroded fair competition, and directly affected consumers when accessing open web platforms. US Attorney General Pamela Bondi called this "a landmark victory" in the effort to prevent Google from manipulating the digital market.
Speaking about the verdict, Assistant Attorney General Abigail Slater of the Justice Department's Antitrust Division said the April 17 ruling was a clear demonstration that Google not only controls the online advertising system but is also consolidating its power across the entire online space. Google said it would appeal. Lee-Anne Mulholland, Google's vice president of regulatory affairs, said publishers still have many platforms to choose from, and they prioritize using Google because the advertising technology the company provides is simple, reasonable in cost, and highly effective.
This is the second time Google has faced a legal conclusion from a US federal court regarding monopolistic behavior. Specifically, in an August 2024 ruling, the District Court for the District of Columbia in Washington affirmed that Google had illegally monopolized the online search market.
