Green lungs surrounding the city
Walking along Highway 46 through Nghi An Commune, Vinh City, many people are amazed by the rows of flowers and ornamental plants blooming together, creating a poetic and colorful scene. On this "flower street", trucks carrying seedlings continuously come and go, garden owners move their goods quickly, their smiles as bright as flowers welcoming the sun.

Having just taken a break from transferring flower seeds, Ms. Nguyen Thi Tuyen in Nghi An commune happily said: “It’s almost the Tet flower season, so everyone in the profession has to be quick to prepare to plant the seeds at the right time. The better the preparation, the more favorable the flower growth will be, and the new flower crop will yield high profits…” Entering the “main” season of the year, it is easy to understand why the villagers are busier than usual, with voices and laughter echoing throughout the area.
We turned onto the road leading to Kim Chi flower village, the cool, long shade of the trees exuded the peacefulness of the suburbs. Next to the village cultural house, Mr. Le Van Chat from Kim Chi village was busy pulling the pump, watering the flower trellis that was blooming after a day of sunshine. Pointing to the tall bougainvillea tree in front of the gate, Mr. Chat exclaimed: “Someone has offered 60 million VND for this tree, but I haven’t sold it yet, waiting for the price to go up, because over the past few years this is the tree I have been most passionate about and taken care of the most…”.

Mr. Chat is one of the first households to grow flowers and ornamental plants in Kim Chi hamlet, Nghi An commune. Talking about the opportunity to become involved in the profession, Mr. Chat said: More than 30 years ago, this Kim Chi land was not inhabited much, people mainly grew trees such as casuarina, eucalyptus, fruit trees... the economic efficiency was not high. At that time, some people in the hamlet often set aside a little garden land to grow more flowers and ornamental plants, diversifying the types of trees. After that, the ornamental plants themselves had many buyers, the consumption market was more stable, gradually, people expanded the area, the number of trees was also more abundant, developing into a flower village and recognized as it is now.
Kim Chi hamlet is one of the most famous flower and ornamental plant villages in Nghe An province. Almost every house in the hamlet has ornamental plants in their gardens and around their houses. Small households have from 1,000 to 2,000 plants, large households have tens of thousands of plants, countless. Since switching to growing flowers and ornamental plants, the lives of the people in Kim Chi hamlet have also improved significantly, as evidenced by the high-rise buildings built next to the flower gardens, the many cars running on each village road... More and more households are renting business locations along National Highway 46 to display flowers for visitors from all over.

Sharing about the income from the flower growing profession, Ms. Nguyen Thi Binh, a professional, said: Flowers and ornamental plants are “countless”, there are both common and expensive types. For flowers, they usually cost from tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands of VND, sold individually or by vase and basket. However, there are ornamental plants that have been cared for for many years, are large in size, are trimmed in layers, made into bonsai... and cost from tens of millions to hundreds of millions of VND. Although the price is high, it is worth the many years of care of the people in the profession.
It is known that Nghi An commune currently has 3 main flower and ornamental plant craft villages: Kim Chi, Kim My, Kim Phuc, with more than 300 households working in the profession. Income from flower and ornamental plant growing has helped people have a prosperous economy, contributing to the gradual transformation of Nghi An commune from a purely agricultural locality into a famous flower village in the province.
Not only Nghi An commune, the suburbs of Vinh also have unique flower craft villages in Nghi Lien and Hung Dong communes... Trung Lien hamlet (Nghi Lien commune) is also an area specializing in flowers and ornamental plants, with 300 households, 90 of which are engaged in the profession, some of which have established companies to participate in bidding for projects serving shade and urban beautification, creating stable jobs for hundreds of workers. Coming to Trung Lien hamlet, walking under the cool shade of green trees, looking at the meticulously shaped bonsai pots makes everyone admire.

Mr. Tran Tien Dung - Vice Chairman of Nghi Lien Commune People's Committee said: Growing flowers and ornamental plants has brought stable income to local people for many years, with higher economic value than other crops. Many households have converted from agricultural land for rice production to growing high-income ornamental plants. Many households have escaped poverty and become rich on their homeland. Typically, Mr. Nguyen Dinh Ha's household and Mr. Nguyen Van Duc's household can earn billions of dong each year from selling ornamental plants...
Building the first flower market in Nghe An
In fact, nowadays, flower and ornamental plant products are increasingly popular, especially in the era of needing green space and a clean environment like today. The flower and ornamental plant village on the outskirts of Vinh is not only the "green lung" surrounding the city but also a tourist destination, attracting visitors from near and far to come back to see the flowers and check-in. On weekends or holidays, the streets in the flower village are bustling with people from all over the country, freely choosing plants and freely admiring and taking pictures with many unique flowers...

Although the flower and ornamental plant growing industry in Vinh City has a tradition of decades, creating a mark on the market, there are still some difficulties such as flower and ornamental plant products are mostly consumed by people within the city, the number of customers in large markets has not yet reached expectations. There is no market or a street specializing in selling flowers and ornamental plants, but the display areas are scattered on a few streets. Brand building and product promotion are still limited... Flower growers need to connect with each other to develop and build brands, the fact that people bring flowers to retail in localities still needs...
With the available potential and advantages, Vinh City authorities have oriented to bring the flower and ornamental plant craft villages in the suburbs together to become a concentrated flower and ornamental plant specialty center, a meeting place and exchange place for flower businesses inside and outside the province, so that the suburban flower area becomes a flower and ornamental plant center of the North Central region.

Accordingly, the city has planned to build the first flower market in Vinh City and Nghe An Province with an area of about 10 hectares in Kim Chi Hamlet, Nghi An Commune, which is also the most famous flower village. Traders at the flower market are not only children of Vinh City but will create conditions for those who want to trade flowers from all over the country to return to trade, creating excitement.
Discussing this issue, Mr. Chu Van Mai - Chairman of Nghi An Commune People's Committee said: Building a flower market brings many benefits. Building a wholesale market for flowers and ornamental plants not only solves the convenient buying and selling needs of the people, but also reduces the situation of small businesses, often violating urban order to trade flowers as before. The flower market will also be a highlight of the city's tourism, a place to display and introduce flower products from regions and areas...
“Currently, the site clearance work to build a flower market in Kim Chi hamlet has been basically completed. In the near future, the city will carry out steps to call for investment and bid to build the market. It is expected that by 2025, the flower market will be in operation, and will be the largest flower and ornamental plant trading point in the province and the region, a highlight when tourists from near and far return to Vinh city…” - Mr. Chu Van Mai emphasized.
