On December 18, at the US Ambassador's Residence in Hanoi, the oath-taking ceremony of the newest and largest class of volunteers of the Peace Corps in Vietnam since the program began operating in Vietnam took place.
Attending the ceremony were representatives from the Ministry of Education and Training and related ministries, representatives from the US Embassy in Vietnam, the Vietnam Peace Program, school principals, volunteers, and international organizations.
With a view to the 30th anniversary of the establishment of U.S.-Vietnam diplomatic relations, the ceremony highlighted the two countries' commitment to promoting people-to-people exchanges and strengthening the bilateral relationship.
Speaking at the event, US Ambassador Marc Knapper affirmed: “This new class of volunteers will continue to contribute to the shared vision, bridging and enhancing understanding between the two countries.”
On this occasion, Ambassador Knapper also congratulated the Vietnamese Ministry of Education and Training and the Peace Program on completing the first program evaluation and preparing to extend the Implementation Agreement signed between the two governments in July next year.
Following the ceremony, the volunteers will begin their work at secondary schools in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. They will be assigned to work alongside Vietnamese English teachers for the next two years, with the aim of helping Vietnamese students improve their English skills, thereby helping them access more study and work opportunities.
This is a follow-up to the Implementation Agreement signed in 2020 between the US government and the Vietnamese government, with the implementing agencies being the Peace Corps Program and the Vietnamese Ministry of Education and Training.
“Programs like the Peace Corps thrive on collaboration, and today is a testament to what we can achieve when we share common values and missions. At its core, the Peace Corps mission is about connection – not just between our countries, but also between volunteers and students, between schools and the teachers who teach them,” said Mikel Herrington, Peace Corps Country Director in Vietnam. He added that the presence of representatives from ministries, schools, teachers and students at the ceremony “is at the heart of our partnership and the destination of the relationship we are building, and is a true measure of our shared success.”

Immediately after arriving in Vietnam in October this year, the volunteers participated in a comprehensive 10-week training course that included learning Vietnamese, participating in a training program in Teaching English as a Second Language (TEFL), and teaching practice at schools with local teachers. Through this training, the volunteers were equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills to adapt to the local context and carry out teaching work in accordance with the Vietnamese education system.
“As we enter a new chapter of the Peace Corps in Vietnam, we will continue to strive for peace and friendship. We are delighted to have the opportunity to work with Vietnamese teachers to improve the quality of English learning and teaching. More importantly, we are delighted to learn from the experiences of Vietnamese teachers and partners. We will try our best to contribute,” shared a newly sworn volunteer.
This is the third batch of volunteers to arrive in Vietnam. The first batch of volunteers who arrived in Vietnam in 2022 have completed their term after two years working in secondary schools.
The Peace Corps is an independent agency of the executive branch of the U.S. Government that operates volunteer programs to support host governments in implementing their development priorities. Since President John F. Kennedy established the Peace Corps in 1961, more than 240,000 U.S. citizen volunteers have served in over 142 countries around the world. Vietnam is the 143rd country to invite and partner with the Peace Corps./.
