Candidates taking the first aptitude test at the University of Science (Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City)
Candidates review elementary and middle school knowledge to prepare for the university entrance aptitude test.
Some candidates believe that this year's aptitude test at the Ho Chi Minh City National University includes knowledge from lower grades, forcing them to review both lower and higher school material in parallel to achieve the best results.

On the morning of March 30th, nearly 120,000 candidates took the first round of the aptitude test of the Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City (VNU-HCM). Speaking to Thanh Nien newspaper at the exam center at the University of Science (VNU-HCM) campus in District 5, Nguyen Ngoc Minh Anh, a 12th-grade student in Math 2 at the High School for the Gifted (VNU-HCM), said she mainly studied on her own. Minh Anh said the most difficult part for her was Vietnamese, and the least challenging was history, as she had previously won a national award for excellence in this subject.
One notable point, according to Minh Anh, is that her teachers advised her to reread her middle school textbooks, not just high school textbooks, "because the knowledge in middle school textbooks is foundational, while high school textbooks only delve deeper" in the new curriculum. This is extremely important because the knowledge tested in the competency assessment exam is not advanced but covers a wide range of different fields, Minh Anh shared.

"In the exam room, I'll do math and subjects that require a lot of logical thinking first because I'm most alert at the beginning of the exam. After that, I'll continue to do the easy questions, skipping the difficult ones until the end," said the female student studying the combination of math, literature, English, and history.
Ha Duc Cuong, a 12th-grade student from Tran Khai Nguyen High School (District 5, Ho Chi Minh City), believes the biggest obstacle when preparing for the aptitude test is having to review a lot of old knowledge learned during his three years of high school, "followed by knowledge from primary and secondary school." The most difficult part, according to the student, is the reasoning questions in the English section, and the word search and spelling correction in the Vietnamese section. Cuong is also worried about the physics, chemistry, and biology questions in the scientific reasoning section.
Ha Duc Cuong, a student in class 12A5 at Tran Khai Nguyen High School, said he spent months preparing for the aptitude test.

"There were some questions at the common reading comprehension level, but even I didn't understand them after reading the questions because I'd never studied that subject before. Some of my friends who studied physics and chemistry sometimes couldn't understand them either because the information might be outside our curriculum," Cuong said. "In the upcoming exam, I'll do the easy questions first, circle the difficult ones and leave them for later. I'll also leave math and natural science for later because they require a lot of thinking, application, and calculator use."
In the first phase of the 2025 competency assessment exam, candidates can take the test in 25 provinces and cities: Hue, Da Nang, Quang Nam, Quang Ngai, Binh Dinh, Phu Yen, Khanh Hoa, Lam Dong, Ninh Thuan, Binh Thuan, Dong Nai, Ba Ria - Vung Tau, Tien Giang, Vinh Long, Bac Lieu, Ca Mau, Can Tho, Kien Giang, An Giang , Dong Thap, Tay Ninh, Binh Duong, Binh Phuoc, Dak Lak and Ho Chi Minh City.

This year, the aptitude test of the Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City still consists of 120 multiple-choice objective questions with 150 minutes to complete and is conducted on paper. However, the structure of the aptitude test has been adjusted for the first time to align with the 2018 general education curriculum. Two notable points are the adjustments to the content and number of questions in each knowledge area group, and the requirement for candidates to take the test in all 11 knowledge area groups.
This year, more than 100 universities and colleges have registered to use the results of the aptitude test administered by the Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City (VNU-HCM) for admissions. Previously, in 2024, the test helped VNU-HCM recruit over 9,200 students, accounting for more than 38% of the total enrollment quota for the entire system. The maximum score for the aptitude test is 1,200, and each question has a different weighting depending on its difficulty.
