Over hundreds of years, the town considered the perfect military defense in Italy is still carefully preserved, attracting tourists from near and far.
Palmanova is a peaceful town in Italy. Seen from above, this UNESCO World Heritage town has a unique layout and a complex, fortified defense system. It is considered one of the typical military architectures of the late Renaissance in Europe.
Construction of the town began in 1593 as a defense against Ottoman attacks. However, it took a hundred years from start to finish. The entire site is surrounded by concentric circular walls and the surrounding structures form a nine-pointed star, with protrusions at the corners for guarding.
All architecture is well planned and perfect.
The roads and buildings in town are carefully maintained.
When observed from above, everyone admires the talent of the designer and the construction workers. Everything here is perfect and carefully calculated. After many ups and downs, the town still retains its original architecture.
With the shape of a 9-pointed star, Palmanova holds many interesting mysteries in the eyes of everyone. It consists of 3 gates to enter inside, 18 radial roads, 6 main axes all leading to the 6-sided central square.

Surrounding the town is a system of underground tunnels, some of which are accessible to visitors. In addition, a moat system around the town helps to protect it tightly.
In the past, no one wanted to live here. So, in the 17th century, only prisoners under house arrest lived in Palmanova. Over time, the prisoners became the town's first residents.
This place was twice a military base thanks to its unique design.
During World War I, thanks to its strategic location, it became an Italian military base with a hospital, weapons depot... During World War II, it became a military base again.
There are not many residents living in Palmanova.
The town could have housed 20,000 people, but not everyone would want to live inside such a mysterious structure. So the population is very small, which is a factor that brings peace and helps the structures to be carefully preserved over the past hundreds of years.

Visitors here can visit beautiful places such as the Provveditore Generale palace, which is now the city hall, and the military history museum.
Tourists not only get to stroll along the radial roads and admire the wonderfully preserved ancient structures, they also get to see with their own eyes the reenactments of ancient battles.
In 1960, the town of Palmanova was declared a National Monument by Italy. In 2017, UNESCO recognized the site as a World Heritage Site. In 2018, the town was named among the most beautiful villages in Italy.
