A series of famous pho restaurants

Visiting the area around Hanoi's Grand Cathedral early in the morning, tourists can enjoy delicious pho at Pho Tu Lun Au Trieu, Pho Oanh Tho Xuong, or Pho 10 Ly Quoc Su.

Located next to Hanoi's Grand Cathedral, Tư Lùn's pho restaurant is bustling with customers every day. It's not uncommon to see diners lining up or setting up their own plastic chairs, carrying their pho, and enjoying it on the sidewalk.

This pho restaurant has been awarded the Michelin Bib Gourmand (good restaurant at an affordable price) for three consecutive years, from 2023-2025.

Unlike most pho restaurants in Hanoi that use clear broth, this restaurant's pho has a cloudy, rich broth. The fresh beef is sliced by machine, but before serving the rare beef pho, the owner uses a knife to pound and thin the meat, skillfully placing it in the bowl and pouring the boiling broth over it.

This method helps preserve the sweetness of the meat. Each bowl of pho at the restaurant costs from 55,000 VND.

Just a few hundred meters from Pho Tu Lun Au Trieu is Pho Oanh in Tho Xuong alley, also famous for its large crowds and authentic Nam Dinh -style pho.

During morning rush hour, especially on weekends, dozens of tables and chairs inside and outside the restaurant are packed with customers. The owners have to move plastic chairs onto the sidewalk in front of their neighbor's house so customers can sit and eat pho.

The rare beef slices are thinly sliced, pounded, and quickly topped with boiling pho broth to preserve their sweetness, aroma, and nutrients. The brisket is always fresh and perfectly cooked. The pho at this restaurant is affordably priced, starting from 40,000 VND per bowl.

Another famous pho restaurant located not far from the Grand Cathedral is Pho 10 Ly Quoc Su. It has been on the Bib Gourmand list for three consecutive years. The restaurant is often packed, and customers, especially foreigners, have to queue outside. Pho here costs from 70,000 VND.

"Snack food paradise"

Grilled fermented pork sausage (nem chua nướng) is a famous snack in the area around Hanoi's Grand Cathedral, usually sold from early afternoon until night. The sausages retain their vibrant pink color and a sticky, slightly charred outer layer, placed on a layer of green banana leaves.

Grilled fermented pork sausage is served with a small bowl of chili sauce, jicama, and green mango. Diners can also order additional snacks such as french fries and fried fermented pork sausage.

One must-try snack near the Cathedral is the Banh Goi Goi (pillow-shaped dumplings) from Goc Da. Although the shop is small and simple, with only a few basic tables and chairs, it's usually packed with customers during rush hour.

The steaming hot dumplings have a beautiful golden color, a thin, crispy crust, and a rich, fragrant filling of meat, wood ear mushrooms, shiitake mushrooms, vermicelli, and Chinese sausage. They are served with a dipping sauce made according to a family recipe, along with a few slices of papaya and a plate of fresh vegetables. Each dumpling costs 14,000 VND.

Every autumn, when visiting the Grand Cathedral, tourists can easily spot vendors selling traditional green rice flakes. The fragrant, chewy rice flakes are wrapped in fresh green leaves. Eating green rice flakes, or sticky rice with green rice flakes, is on the list of "must-do things in Hanoi during autumn".

Visitors can sit and sip egg coffee, enjoy fragrant, chewy rice flakes, or sweet and savory sticky rice with rice flakes, while admiring the streets around the church.

Eel vermicelli and pork rib porridge are warming dishes that will soothe your stomach.

Near the Grand Cathedral is the famous Ngo Huyen Alley pork rib porridge shop. The dish is made from ground rice flour and bone broth. The porridge is soft, smooth, and creamy without any grainy rice. The pork cartilage is cleaned and simmered just right to be crispy but not tough.

Each bowl of porridge is usually served with two fried dough sticks and some shredded pork floss for added flavor. Each bowl costs from 30,000 VND.

Right at the intersection of Chan Cam and Ly Quoc Su streets, there's a famous and popular eel noodle soup restaurant called Chan Cam. Each bowl contains vermicelli noodles and blanched bean sprouts, cucumber salad with vinegar and spices, shredded carrots, Vietnamese coriander, cilantro, and crispy or soft fried eel, depending on the customer's preference.

Fried eel should be crispy, not tough, not burnt, and not greasy. Even when you reach the bottom of the bowl, the eel should still retain its crispness.

The mixed vermicelli is served with a dressing made from soy sauce, seasoned harmoniously with sour, salty, sweet, and mildly spicy flavors. Meanwhile, the vermicelli soup is topped with a ladle of hot broth, fragrant with eel, rich in flavor, and naturally sweet without any MSG.

For the eel salad, the owner combines ingredients such as bean sprouts, finely chopped banana blossoms, cucumber, carrots, dried onions, herbs, and crispy fried eel, all mixed with a sweet and sour dipping sauce. This dish is refreshing, savory, and crunchy.

Hanoi makes it to the list of the most beautiful autumn foliage viewing destinations in Asia . Alongside many famous names such as Nami Island (South Korea), Kyoto (Japan), and Jiuzhaigou (China), Hanoi is the only representative of Vietnam to appear on Time Out's list of the most beautiful autumn foliage viewing destinations in Asia.
