Goalkeeper De Gea officially says goodbye to Man United

The Spanish goalkeeper's contract expired at the end of June, and both Man United and De Gea had talks about extending the contract but failed to find common ground. The "Red Devils" initially wanted to extend but forced De Gea to reduce his salary from over £300,000/week to under £200,000/week and then stopped negotiating right before the Spanish goalkeeper got married.

David de Gea shared on his personal Twitter: "I just want to send this farewell message to all the Manchester United fans. I want to express my gratitude and respect for the past 12 years. I and Manr United have won many titles since my beloved Sir Alex Ferguson brought me into this family.

I am so proud every time I wear this shirt, to represent this team, to represent this club on the pitch, it is an honour that is only given to a lucky few. It has been an unforgettable and successful time since I arrived here. I did not think that when I left Madrid as a young boy, I would achieve such great things with Manchester United.

"Now, this is the right time to take on a new challenge, to push myself to take a new path. Man United will always be in my heart, the club has given me a wonderful second family and given me the opportunity to become the player I am today. Thank you for everything."

Coach Erik ten Hag also shared a few words on Man United's official page, he praised De Gea for everything this goalkeeper has contributed to the "Red Devils" over the past 12 years and also gave his best wishes to De Gea for the next stage of his career.

David de Gea has made a total of 545 appearances since Sir Alex Ferguson brought the 32-year-old to Old Trafford. De Gea has kept 190 clean sheets and won eight trophies with the Old Trafford side, including the Premier League, Europa League and FA Cup.
