The Central Maternity Hospital was established on July 19, 1955. It went through stages of development and name changes from Hospital C (1960) to the Institute for the Protection of Mothers and Newborns (1966) and officially became the Central Maternity Hospital in 2003.
One of the most outstanding marks of the Central Maternity Hospital is its pioneering and success in the field of neonatal resuscitation, especially the treatment of extremely premature babies, weighing less than 1,000g.
To date, the hospital has saved the lives of 2,955 premature babies, of whom more than 90% did not require intubation. The rate of chronic lung complications and cerebral hemorrhage in newborns has dropped sharply, from 68% to 25%.
In particular, the survival rate of infants under 1,000g has increased from 58% to 85%. Many infants born at 23-25 weeks of gestation have been successfully treated and grow up healthy, without neurological or motor sequelae. Thanks to these achievements, the overall neonatal mortality rate at the hospital has dropped to below 5%.
