Immediately, the family took H. to Chau Doc General Hospital ( An Giang ) for examination, then transferred him to the emergency room at Ho Chi Minh City Eye Hospital.
On November 4, specialist Dr. Vo Duc Dung, Head of the Pediatric Ophthalmology Department, Ho Chi Minh City Eye Hospital, said that through the examination and evaluation of the diagnostic imaging results, H.'s left eye was pierced by a fishing hook in the corneal area at the edge, accompanied by a broken lens, hemorrhage throughout the eyeball and iris protrusion. It is currently impossible to assess the exit route of the hook. Doctors assessed the eye damage as severe, with a high risk of having to remove the eye.
Taking a medical history, H.'s mother said that at 4:00 p.m. on October 28, H. was fishing with a friend in An Giang when his friend accidentally swung the fishing rod and the hook hit H.'s left eye. After that, H.'s eye became blurry and painful.

After being admitted to the emergency room, H. was urgently examined by a team of doctors, who performed the necessary tests and performed surgery to remove the foreign object from the fish hook that had penetrated the eyeball. During the surgery, the doctor was able to explore the exit of the wound and suture the sclera, thereby preserving the left eyeball of the patient. H. is currently hospitalized and is in stable health condition.
Doctor's recommendation
Through this case, Dr. Dung recommends that parents should pay attention to preventing accidents caused by fishing hooks for children when participating in fishing activities. Because fishing hooks have very dangerous barbs that can easily cause serious eye damage. People should absolutely not remove them themselves, but should keep the hook in place and go immediately to the nearest eye specialist medical facility for timely treatment instructions.
