On the afternoon of September 10, at the Government Headquarters, Politburo member and Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh met with Governor-General of Australia Sam Mostyn.
At the meeting, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh affirmed that Vietnam always attaches importance to the friendship and Comprehensive Strategic Partnership with Australia; emphasizing that the bilateral relationship has come a long way, reaching a level that few people could have imagined when the two countries established diplomatic relations.
Governor-General of Australia Sam Mostyn stressed that Australia wishes to be a trustworthy and sincere partner of Vietnam; he said that Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh's visit to Australia in March 2024 and the upgrading of relations to Comprehensive Strategic Partnership is a historic milestone, reflecting strategic trust, depth and a shared vision for the future of the two countries' relationship.
The two sides agreed to further strengthen political ties through promoting exchanges and contacts at high and all levels, through all channels of the Party, State, National Assembly and people-to-people exchanges; continue to effectively implement the Action Program to implement the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership for the 2024-2027 period as well as effectively maintain bilateral cooperation mechanisms.
The two leaders agreed to continue strengthening the defense-security cooperation pillar to be increasingly trustworthy and strategic, further enhancing economic, trade and investment cooperation, development cooperation, education-training and science-technology; cultural cooperation and people-to-people exchange.
Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh suggested that both sides promote measures towards the target of two-way trade turnover of 20 billion USD and doubling two-way investment within the next 2-3 years; expand cooperation and investment in potential fields such as minerals and essential minerals, rare earth, and renewable energy.
Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh also asked Australia to support Vietnam in building a national population database and a national data center; support capacity building training for Vietnamese officials and civil servants; continue to encourage universities such as RMIT to expand their branches in Vietnam; and ask Australia to continue creating favorable conditions for the community of more than 300,000 Vietnamese people in Australia.
The Australian Governor-General affirmed Australia's commitment to continue cooperation to further develop the bilateral relationship; shared Australia's desire to increase investment opportunities in Vietnam through the Investment Promotion Office established in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City; agreed to strengthen cooperation on cyber security; and supported Vietnam in its role as host of the opening ceremony of the United Nations Convention on Cybercrime (October 2025).
The Australian Governor-General said that, in his capacity as Commander of the Australian Defence Force, he wished to further deepen the defence relationship between the two countries to contribute to peacekeeping; stressed that Vietnam is one of Australia's most important partners in maintaining peace and stability in the region; wished to continue cooperation, promote ASEAN's central role, implement the ASEAN Vision on the Indo-Pacific; committed to supporting Vietnam in organizing the ASEAN Future Forum as well as promoting cooperation to respond to cross-border challenges, Mekong Sub-region cooperation, and combat climate change in Vietnam's Mekong Delta.
