The landslide occurred at around 10:30 a.m. on May 16, when 9 workers of Dung Phuc Loc Construction Investment Joint Stock Company (headquartered in Nghe An ) were working to straighten the flow of Ta Pao Ho stream when suddenly rocks and soil from the positive slope fell down, burying 5 people and injuring 4 others.
Immediately after receiving the news, Lai Chau Provincial People's Committee mobilized about 150 officers and soldiers from the Police, Army, Border Guard forces, along with specialized vehicles, to the scene. The rugged terrain, slippery access roads due to prolonged heavy rain, and the risk of continued landslides have caused many difficulties for the rescue work.
By 2:00 p.m. on May 17, all five victims' bodies had been found and handed over to their families for burial. The victims' identities included: Luong Van Ha (born in 1987, from Nghe An); Tan Su May (born in 1986), Tan U May (born in 1984), Ly Lao San (born in 2008) and Phan Lao Lo (born in 2009), all from Si Lo Lau commune, Phong Tho district, Lai Chau province.

The four injured victims are being treated at Lai Chau General Hospital and are currently in stable condition.
Chairman of Lai Chau Provincial People's Committee, Mr. Le Van Luong, was directly present at the scene to direct the rescue work, visit and encourage the families of the victims and request relevant departments and branches to urgently investigate the cause of the incident and strictly handle organizations and individuals if there are violations.
This is the first serious landslide in this year's flood season in Lai Chau, causing great loss of life. Currently, the authorities are continuing to investigate and clarify the cause of the incident to take preventive measures in the future.
