Episode 1 of Divorce Insurance opens with a dramatic and humorous play at a wedding fair, where couples are excitedly choosing discounted wedding dresses and the perfect cake for their big day. But then, like a strange wind blowing through, four eccentric characters appear to stir up the atmosphere: Noh Ki-jun, Kang Han-deul, An Jeon-man and Ah-yeong. They bring not flowers or blessings, but a bold product – divorce insurance.
Noh Ki-jun, the leader with his sharp eyes and persuasive voice, declared that preparing for divorce was as important as choosing a wedding ring. As the crowd frowned and murmured in disapproval, he burst into a passionate speech: “Divorce is like an accident—no one wants it, but who can say it won’t happen? Child support, emotional pain—do you dare leave it all behind?” His team was clumsy as can be: Jeon-man blushed in embarrassment, Ah-yeong smiled awkwardly, and Han-deul stood still as a statue. Soon, the angry crowd chased them out of the fair.
Hiding in a corner, Jeon-man turns to Ki-jun and argues with him about the crazy risks of this idea. But before the argument can escalate, a curious customer suddenly appears, wanting to hear more about the product. Ki-jun immediately regains his composure, declaring confidently: “Marriage or divorce, both lead to happiness – just in different ways!”

The story flashes back three months, revealing the origin of this strange idea. Ki-jun, a man who had failed miserably in every insurance project, sat listlessly in an empty office with his boss, Na Dae-bok, the last remaining member of the product development team. A nightmare appeared: the most painful divorce of his life, where he lost everything. In the dream, the God of Insurance appeared, whispering: “Insurance is happiness.” When Ki-jun woke up, he was enlightened by the idea of divorce insurance.
At the same time, Dae-bok is facing his own tragedy: his wife, So-jeong, announces her divorce right at the company. At that moment, Ki-jun walks in, presenting his idea with sharp reasoning: “Divorce is not just about alimony – it’s about psychological trauma, a broken home, a broken relationship. Everyone needs a lifeline!” Dae-bok, devastated, nods in agreement.
The story shifts to Kang Han-deul, a recently divorced appraiser, standing in a daze in a shopping mall. She bursts into tears when she realizes she accidentally ordered food for two – an old habit from her broken marriage. At home, she sits knitting in emptiness, reminiscing about her ex-husband who cleaned out all her assets, mortgaged the house for his cafe, and even borrowed money from her mother. When she asks for it back, he scolds her for “going back on her word” and calls her a loser. Han-deul grits her teeth, only just enough time to correct him for using the word “evasive” before sinking into grief.
Back at the company, Ki-jun convinces his team with a sharp argument about the overall impact of divorce. Jeon-man, the only one who objects, is surprised to discover that Ki-jun has been divorced once. During the argument, the secret is revealed: Ki-jun has divorced three times because he couldn't stand wives who were too different from him – especially the first one who wanted an open marriage. Jeon-man left his wife because "she didn't like me." Ki-jun sneers, calling his friend a coward for not daring to fight back.
In another corner, Ah-yeong – Ki-jun’s colleague – appears to cheer up Han-deul. Ah-yeong’s own wedding has just broken down, but she is still optimistic, determined to keep all the gifts to make up for the loss. Seeing Han-deul as so gentle, Ah-yeong “reinvents” her into a cheerful eccentric, preparing for her first day at the insurance company. But when Han-deul comes home, she is left with only the old mattress. Deciding to throw it away, she struggles to pull the mattress out, just as Ki-jun walks by drunk. He thinks the mattress can walk, rushes in, and both fall… right on the mattress, still covered by the blanket. The result? They are arrested for “disturbing public order.”
At the police station, the two get into a heated argument over the comical incident. When the police officer misuses the word “evade,” Ki-jun corrects her, much to Han-deul’s surprise. He recognizes her as “the one who cried at the mall,” apologizes quickly, and drags her away before she can react. But when he tells her “not to go back on her word,” their goodwill evaporates, and they vow never to see each other again before leaving in anger.
Back at the company, Ki-jun's divorce insurance idea is a huge success. Applications are pouring in from people who really need it. Ah-yeong, despite her eccentricity, is hired as an employee. Jeon-man joins as a risk researcher, and Han-deul shows up with a presentation on divorce rates and the importance of context – impressing Ki-jun enough to let her join the team.
Tensions rise when a financial analyst from the Singapore branch is appointed as deputy general manager of the project. To make matters worse, the CEO’s daughter is getting divorced and wants to buy insurance, which takes things to a whole new level. The team is buzzing about this analyst – a cold, numbers-driven, emotionless person. In the elevator, amid their bickering and awkwardness, the door opens. In comes Na-rae – Ki-jun’s third ex-wife.
Episode 1 of Divorce Insurance is an emotional roller coaster – from silly laughter at a wedding fair to deep heartbreak, all wrapped up in a bold idea: insurance against breakup. With a cast of characters that are both humorous and complex, the story opens up a world where divorce is not just an end, but also the beginning of something unexpected. Na-rae appears at the end of the episode like a time bomb, promising peak drama ahead. Are you ready for the next episode?
