Despite receiving interest from AC Milan and Brighton, Tomiyasu chose Ajax as a springboard to return to top-level football. |
According to Voetbal, this short-term contract will last until June 2026, with the possibility of being extended for another 1-2 years depending on the performance and fitness of the Japanese defender.
Signing with Ajax is seen as a way out of the stagnant career of the former Arsenal star. Last month, Tomiyasu celebrated his 27th birthday unemployed and with no club showing any interest.
Tomiyasu's contract with Arsenal ends in the summer of 2025 following a series of persistent injuries, particularly a knee injury sustained during the 2024/25 pre-season tour, which led to further surgery in February.
It was thought that becoming a free agent would help Tomiyasu quickly find a new club, but injuries continued to plague him. Currently, Tomiyasu has just completed his injury recovery, allowing him to reach an agreement with Ajax.
With 84 appearances for Arsenal in all competitions, and experience from Bologna and Sint-Truiden, Tomiyasu is seen by Ajax as a "golden opportunity" to strengthen their defense, which has been performing poorly this season. If he performs well at Ajax, Tomiyasu's chances of participating in the 2026 World Cup with Japan will increase.
