German President waited with his arms crossed at the door of the plane for 30 minutes after landing in Qatar.

The sun was high in the sky. The red carpet was rolled out. The honor guard was assembled. Even the German ambassador to Qatar, Lothar Freischlader, was waiting, according to a report by Deutsche Welle (DW) on November 30. The only problem was that no Qatari government officials were present at the welcoming ceremony for German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier during his official visit to Doha on November 29.

Because the German government plane (Airbus A350) arrived a bit early, Mr. Steinmeier was forced to wait in the scorching Middle Eastern sun for nearly 30 minutes before Qatari Foreign Minister Sultan al-Muraichai arrived.

The entire incident was recorded and reported by DW journalist Rosalia Romaniec, who accompanied the delegation. Journalist Romaniec said it was still unclear whether the problem with the welcoming ceremony was due to the planning stage or not.

Before arriving in Doha, Mr. Steinmeier officially visited Israel for 3 days, then spent 2 nights in Oman, but when arriving in Qatar, he only spent 3 hours there.

Despite the unexpected delay, the German President still left Doha airport in time for official talks with Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, leader of Qatar.

Qatar is now taking on a mediating role in an effort to persuade Hamas and Israel to sit down at the negotiating table and allow the Gaza Strip to witness a precious ceasefire for civilians in the conflict zone.
