ONLINE TEACHING, WEEKEND MAKE-UP TEACHING

Reporting to the Ministry of Education and Training, some schools in Da Nang City said that they had to let students stay home for 7 days due to the impact of flooding. The schools will arrange to make up for the lost classes on Saturdays and Sundays in the coming time to ensure the program is in accordance with regulations.

In Hue City, Mr. Nguyen Tan, Director of the Department of Education and Training of Hue City, said that schools that had to let students stay home for a long time due to deep flooding in Quang Dien Commune, Hoa Chau Ward... will conduct online teaching. Students who cannot study online because their families still have power outages will have their teachers arrange for make-up lessons after they return to school, to ensure that they do not lose knowledge due to floods.

Previously, some provinces such as Thai Nguyen, Bac Ninh , Tuyen Quang... also had dozens of schools that had to close for a long time due to storms and floods, some schools had to close for about a week. However, localities and schools were also proactive and flexible in making up for students. Leaders of the Department of Education and Training of Bac Ninh province said that they had directed schools when organizing for students to return to school, the first thing to pay attention to is the number of students. Are the absent students due to the impact of storms and floods or any other reason, and proactively arrange reasonable make-up time to ensure the progress of the 2025-2026 school year program.

In Thai Nguyen, Mr. Phan Vu Hao, Principal of Ngo Quyen High School, said that students had to completely stop going to school for about a week. The floods caused more than 200 transformer stations in this province to stop working, causing power outages, water outages, and communication outages, making it impossible to conduct online teaching. After students returned to school, the school organized make-up classes on the weekend to ensure they kept up with the general curriculum.

Tuc Duyen Secondary School (Thai Nguyen) also had to stay home from school for more than a week. However, because the flood damaged nearly 100 desks and chairs, when students returned to school, the school had to divide the classes into shifts to temporarily fix the problem while waiting for new desks and chairs.

According to Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Tuan, Director of the Department of Education and Training of Thai Nguyen, storm No. 11 and the floods after the storm have caused serious damage to the education sector of this province. The whole province has 180 educational establishments affected; 2 officials and teachers unfortunately died while on duty; more than 11,600 sets of textbooks, 55,000 notebooks and 5,000 sets of school supplies were damaged. Many families of officials, teachers, staff and students were flooded, causing heavy property damage. The total value of the converted damage is estimated at nearly 182 billion VND...

" ENSURE A SCHOOL YEAR IS NECESSARY BUT NOT RIGID"

The Ministry of Education and Training said that on November 4-5, the Ministry's working delegation led by Deputy Minister Pham Ngoc Thuong visited and encouraged the education sector of Da Nang City. Here, Mr. Thuong emphasized the need to "ensure safety" for students and teachers when deciding to let students return to school. "It is necessary to avoid roads, bridges, and water that have not receded but still mobilize students to go to school; even the smallest things are not mechanical and rigid like at this time, students must wear uniforms to school," Deputy Minister Thuong noted...

Mr. Thuong also quoted a letter from a teacher who wrote: "After the storm stops and the water recedes, as long as the children can get to school, don't worry about clean clothes, don't worry about wearing sandals, don't worry about wearing uniforms, just let the children smile when they go to school." From there, Mr. Thuong hopes that the Departments of Education and Training affected by the storm will direct, care for, encourage, and provide psychological support for teachers and students. "We may not be able to fully support the facilities, but we need to provide psychological and spiritual support for teachers and students," Mr. Thuong suggested.

Regarding the school year schedule, Mr. Thuong noted that the school must have a suitable make-up teaching plan, ensuring progress, but not putting too much pressure on students and teachers. Because teachers' houses were also heavily flooded, they need to be cleaned. Therefore, the school must be flexible, ensuring pedagogy, especially prioritizing review for final year students... Ensuring the school year schedule is necessary but not rigid or stressful, because at this time everyone is tired from fighting storms and floods, if it is too rushed, teachers and students will have a hard time, and the results will not be good.

Sharing more, the representative of the Ministry of Education and Training said that from the experience of Typhoon Yagi in 2024, some schools in the northern mountainous provinces had to close for a long time, so the Department of Education and Training needs to review to have appropriate plans such as sending students from schools and school locations that cannot operate to the main school or other schools in the area to study. For students who have to move too far from home, there should be a plan suitable to the actual conditions to support students to study in semi-boarding and boarding schools during the time to overcome the effects of floods.

In addition, the Department of Education and Training has the authority to direct the mobilization of teachers in schools in the area to support teachers, students, and schools damaged by storms and floods so that they can organize teaching and make up for students who have to miss school due to floods. In cases where students are too difficult to go to school, the school has a plan to maintain their studies such as assigning homework, guiding students to self-study, assigning teachers to directly support students, groups of students, etc.

Director of Department of Education and Training decided to let students take time off from school and make up for lost school

According to the Decision promulgating the timetable framework for the 2025-2026 school year of the Ministry of Education and Training, the first semester will end before January 18, 2026, and the program will be completed and the school year will end before May 31, 2026.

The school year of each locality must ensure 35 weeks of actual study (18 weeks for semester 1, 17 weeks for semester 2). The school year schedule must be appropriate to the characteristics and practical conditions of the locality.

The school start time and the extension of the school year shall not exceed 2 weeks compared to the regulations to ensure the implementation and completion of preschool education, general education and continuing education programs in case of being affected by natural disasters or epidemics; in special cases, report to the Ministry of Education and Training before implementation.

The planning framework of the Ministry of Education and Training also stipulates that the director of the Department of Education and Training decides to let students stay home from school in case of extreme weather or natural disasters and arrange make-up classes; ensuring teachers' time off during the school year.

The Department of Education and Training of the province requested localities and units to allow students to stay home from school from this afternoon (November 6) until further notice. Schools must review and reinforce facilities such as corrugated iron roofs, windows, classrooms, trees, dormitories, etc. to limit damage caused by the storm.
