US President: Phone call with General Secretary To Lam was "very effective"

US President Donald Trump shared that his phone call with General Secretary To Lam was very productive and affirmed his desire to meet again.

On the morning of April 4th (Washington DC time), US President Donald Trump announced on the social media platform Truth Social about his phone call with General Secretary To Lam , affirming that the call was "effective" and thanking the Vietnamese leader for his goodwill.

On his personal account, the US president stated: "I just had a very productive call with Mr. To Lam, General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam, who told me that Vietnam wants to reduce tariffs to zero if they can reach an agreement with the United States. I thanked him on behalf of my country and said that I look forward to a meeting in the near future."

During the phone call, the two leaders affirmed their desire to further strengthen bilateral cooperation for the benefit of both countries and to contribute to peace, stability, and development in the region and the world.

The two leaders assessed that bilateral relations are developing well in various fields.

Regarding bilateral trade relations, the two leaders exchanged views on measures to further promote trade. General Secretary To Lam affirmed that Vietnam is ready to discuss with the United States the possibility of reducing import tariffs to 0% on goods imported from the United States. He also requested that the United States apply similar tariffs to goods imported from Vietnam, continue importing more goods from the United States that Vietnam needs, and encourage and facilitate increased investment by US companies in Vietnam.

The two leaders affirmed that they would exchange views to soon sign a bilateral agreement between the two countries to concretize the above commitments. On this occasion, General Secretary To Lam respectfully invited President Donald J. Trump and his wife to visit Vietnam again soon.

President Donald J. Trump happily accepted the invitation and expressed his desire to meet General Secretary To Lam again soon.

President Donald Trump respectfully asks General Secretary To Lam to convey his warmest greetings to the leaders and people of Vietnam.
