(Dan Tri) - President Donald Trump continues to reiterate his proposal to make Canada the 51st state of the United States.

"We are paying hundreds of billions of dollars to subsidize Canada. Why do we have to do this? There is no reason to do this," President Donald Trump wrote on the social network Truth Social on February 2.
Mr Trump also hinted that without US support, his northern neighbour would struggle to survive.
So Mr. Trump proposed that Canada become the 51st state of the United States, promising "much lower taxes as well as much better military protection for Canadians and no tariffs!"
Previously, Mr. Trump declared that Canadians would not have to worry about their military or many other issues if they decided to annex into the United States.
"They'll also have better health care, in fact much better health care. I think the Canadians would love that if it was explained to them," Trump said.
President Trump on February 2 decided to impose a 25% tax on imports from Canada and Mexico to deal with illegal immigration and drug trafficking.
Mr Trump admitted that Americans may suffer "pain" from these tariffs, but stressed that these were necessary measures to bring long-term benefits.
In response, both US neighbors announced retaliatory tariffs.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau warned this "will have real consequences for the American people," hinting at the risk of higher prices for Americans.
Canadian Finance Minister Dominic LeBlanc on February 2 released a full list of Canadian goods subject to tariffs. The value of US goods subject to tariffs in this first round of Canadian retaliation is up to $30 billion.
A second round of retaliatory tariffs could be announced in the coming weeks, with the total value of targeted products rising to $105 billion.
An unnamed Canadian official said the country would also file a complaint against the United States at the World Trade Organization (WTO) and also seek compensation from Washington under a regional free trade agreement.
Prime Minister Trudeau also firmly rejected the idea of Canada annexing the United States, declaring there was "no chance" of this happening.
This is not the first time Mr. Trump has floated the idea of territorial expansion. Since returning to the White House, he has revived efforts to buy the world's largest island, Greenland, and control the Panama Canal, citing urgent national security needs. These proposals have been rejected by the governments of Panama and Denmark.
The proposal to make Canada the 51st state of the United States has drawn widespread criticism from Canadian officials.
Public opinion in Canada is also strongly opposed to the idea of annexation to the United States. A recent poll found that only 13% of Canadians support the idea, while 82% oppose it.
Meanwhile, President Trump said the US could use its “economic might” to annex Canada. According to Trump, Canada’s annexation to the US would eliminate all tariffs and create business opportunities.
