Ho Chi Minh City adjusts class times for primary school students

VnExpressVnExpress21/08/2023

Elementary schools that only teach one session a day can let students enter class 15 minutes earlier than the old regulation.

Last week, the Ho Chi Minh City Departmentof Education and Training sent a document guiding the organization of activities at the beginning of the new school year for primary schools, including specific regulations on class entry and exit times.

Accordingly, in schools that teach one session per day, students enter class between 7:15 and 7:30. If they study in the afternoon, the first period starts between 12:45 and 1:00 p.m. This is 15 minutes earlier than the previous regulation of the Department.

Schools that teach two sessions a day have students start at 7:30 a.m., no later than 7:45 a.m. In the afternoon, the first period cannot start before 2 p.m. This regulation is similar to the previous school year.

Recess time for each class, including physical exercise, should not be less than 30 minutes. After regular school hours, the school may organize clubs for students.

The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training adjusted the school start time for primary school students last November. At that time, many primary schools set the school start time at 7am, forcing students to wake up early to get to school on time. After many comments from parents, the Department adjusted it to 7:30am. For secondary and high school students, the school start time remains the same, at 7:15am and 7am, respectively.

Depending on the school, students can arrive to class 5-15 minutes early to settle down and start class. Schools can proactively arrange flexible schedules, not requiring four periods in the morning and three periods in the afternoon.

In the 2023-2024 school year, Ho Chi Minh City is expected to have more than 1.7 million preschool and primary school students.
