Colonel Do Vinh Thang, Political Commissar of the Ho Chi Minh City Border Guard, said: On May 7, 1975, implementing the direction of the Central Office of the South, the Ministry of Public Security and the Military Management Committee of Saigon - Gia Dinh City, the "Saigon Port Armed Police Corps" was established with 62 officers and soldiers, under the People's Armed Police Command (now the Border Guard Command). The unit received the transfer of the area and facilities from Regiment 209, Army Corps 4, headquartered at No. 6, Trinh Minh The Street (now Nguyen Tat Thanh Street, District 4).
Since then, May 7th of every year has been determined as the Traditional Day of the Ho Chi Minh City Border Guard force.

After its establishment, the unit quickly deployed its mission of protecting sovereignty , border security and social order and safety in the Saigon Port area. Through many stages, the organization and name of the unit changed according to the requirements of the mission and the practical situation. In 1990, it received the Saigon Port Border Police Station. In December 1995, it was officially named the Ho Chi Minh City Border Guard Command with a complete organizational structure according to the vertical system, ensuring unified command.

During 50 years of construction, fighting and growth, with the attention of the Party Committee, the Border Guard Command and the city's leaders, the coordination of departments, branches, organizations and people, generations of officers and soldiers of the city's Border Guard have always promoted the spirit of solidarity and attachment to the locality, successfully completing the task of protecting the sovereignty and security of the city's sea and port gates.
The force has had thousands of individuals and hundreds of groups awarded. Of which, more than 300 individuals were awarded the Medal of Military Exploit, the Medal of Fatherland Protection, the Medal of Glorious Soldier and the title of "Emulation Soldier of the Whole Army"; hundreds of units were awarded the title of "Determined to Win Unit", "Excellent Emulation Flag", Certificates of Merit, Medals of the State, Government, Central ministries, branches and the city.

In 2008, Nha Rong Port Border Guard Station was awarded the title of Hero of the People's Armed Forces in the Renewal Period. In 2012, the unit was awarded the Second Class Fatherland Protection Medal.
Speaking at the ceremony, Vice Chairman of Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee Duong Ngoc Hai affirmed: Over the past 50 years, generations of officers and soldiers of the City Border Guard have always been the core and specialized force in the management and protection of sea borders and ports; making an important contribution to the process of integration, development and maintaining the stability of security and order of the city.
