Ho Chi Minh City strengthens medical tourism links with southern provinces

Ho Chi Minh City is promoting a strategy to develop inter-regional medical tourism, connecting the high-tech medical strengths of the central city with the rich resort and treatment ecosystem in the Southeast provinces and the Mekong Delta. The goal is to form a chain of branded and sustainable health care tourism products, responding to the trend of "recovery and healing tourism" that is growing strongly globally.

On the morning of October 31, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Tourism organized a conference on medical tourism development between Ho Chi Minh City and provinces and cities in the Mekong Delta and Southeast regions. The event aims to promote the formation of a chain of inter-regional health care - resort - treatment tourism products, in which Ho Chi Minh City plays the role of a medical and tourism center of the region.

Ms. Bui Thi Ngoc Hieu, Deputy Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Tourism , said that currently, about 30-40% of the number of visitors coming to the city for medical examination and treatment are from other provinces, cities and foreign countries. Of which, international visitors mainly come from Cambodia and Laos, in addition to an increasing number of visitors from the US, Australia, Canada, Japan and the overseas Vietnamese community.

According to Ms. Hieu, the need to combine tourism with health care, treatment, rehabilitation and cosmetic therapy is increasing rapidly, opening up opportunities for Ho Chi Minh City to develop high-quality medical tourism products, while diversifying experiences for domestic and foreign tourists.

According to Ms. Hieu, after expanding the connection space with Binh Duong and Ba Ria - Vung Tau, Ho Chi Minh City has favorable conditions to form inter-regional medical tourism routes. The city currently owns nearly 5,000 accommodation facilities, including more than 300 star-rated hotels; over 300 large-scale conference venues; along with a system of high-tech hospitals, spa - therapy centers and a team of highly specialized medical staff. Their goal is to form a branded, sustainable inter-regional medical tourism chain, bringing real health value to tourists, while contributing to making Ho Chi Minh City an international tourist super city.

Currently, in Ho Chi Minh City, tourists can combine accommodation, health check-ups and then travel to neighboring localities for relaxation, treatment and recovery. In this series of journeys, Binh Chau (formerly Ba Ria - Vung Tau province) is a prominent destination, possessing a rare natural hot mineral source in the South, attracting a large number of tourists to Ho Chi Minh City to experience medical tourism services.

Mr. Nguyen Hai Au, representative of Minera Binh Chau said: “The hot mineral source here is good for the circulatory system, bones and joints and skin regeneration. The resort is located in the middle of a primeval forest, creating a fresh space, helping to improve health recovery, so it has attracted many domestic and foreign tourists in recent times.”

In the Mekong Delta region, Can Tho city is considered a locality with great potential in developing medical tourism. Mr. Sam Long Giang, Deputy Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Can Tho city, said that the city currently has a modern hospital system such as Stroke Hospital, Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital, Traditional Medicine Hospital, capable of combining health care with the characteristics of the Mekong Delta.

Can Tho aims to develop health care tourism products combining relaxation, therapy and health gifts from local medicinal herbs, and at the same time wishes to cooperate with travel businesses and hospitals in Ho Chi Minh City to develop a chain of inter-regional medical tourism services, serving domestic and international tourists.
