Ho Chi Minh City: The rate of students entering public grade 10 is expected to increase.

Ho Chi Minh City plans to enroll 71,000 students in public 10th grade schools, equivalent to about 80% of 9th grade students.

This year, Ho Chi Minh City has 88,772 9th graders expected to graduate from junior high school. Regular high schools are expected to enroll 67,835 students; the target for specialized 10th graders is expected to be 2,210 students; the target for integrated 10th graders is expected to be 735 students.

The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training is calculating enrollment by area, assigning quotas suitable to the reality of districts, to reduce pressure on students. Areas such as District 12, Tan Binh, Hoc Mon District with high annual enrollment pressure will be calculated to push the quota ratio of grade 10 public high schools higher than other districts, ensuring study places for students.

As for saturated areas with stable annual study places such as Binh Chanh and Can Gio districts, the enrollment quota for grade 10 public high schools is assigned according to the needs and proposals of the school, based on the school's facilities and teaching staff.

Schools in suburban districts are building new rural areas, requiring schools in the area to meet national standards, with more control over student numbers than other areas, so the 10th grade quota will be calculated and adjusted accordingly.

This year, Ho Chi Minh City will stop enrolling students in specialized 10th grade classes in 4 regular high schools: Mac Dinh Chi High School, Gia Dinh High School, Nguyen Thuong Hien High School and Nguyen Huu Huan High School. Therefore, the quota for specialized 10th grade classes in 2 specialized high schools: Le Hong Phong High School and Tran Dai Nghia High School will increase, in order to meet the learning needs of students as well as create conditions for students with outstanding abilities to have an environment to develop their strengths in suitable subjects and fields. These two schools enroll students nationwide.

It is expected that both schools will enroll 2,210 students for specialized 10th grade, of which Le Hong Phong High School for the Gifted has 805 students, in 23 specialized classes (35 students per class); Tran Dai Nghia High School for the Gifted has 525 students. In addition, the Gifted High School, Ho Chi Minh City National University has announced the enrollment of 595 students for specialized 10th grade.

The 10th grade exam in Ho Chi Minh City took place on June 6-7. Students took the exam in 3 subjects: Math, Literature in 120 minutes and Foreign Language 1 in 90 minutes.

Each student can register for 3 wishes, arranged in order of priority from highest to lowest (wish 1, 2, 3). If they are admitted to a wish, they must study in that wish and cannot change their wish. Students taking the entrance exam for specialized schools must take an additional 150-minute specialized subject test, which is calculated with a coefficient of 2.

Students who register have 2 priority wishes to enter specialized classes. If they do not pass or do not apply to specialized schools, students who graduate from junior high school in the 2024-2025 school year in Ho Chi Minh City can still participate in the admission exam to grade 10 according to 3 wishes to enter public high schools.

The admission process is carried out in 2 phases. In phase 1, students register for 3 priority wishes 1, 2, 3 to take the entrance exam for grade 10 at public high schools. In phase 2, depending on the actual application situation at high schools and the needs of high schools, the Department will decide on additional admission and issue written instructions to ensure the rights of candidates, on the basis of recruiting enough quotas for schools that are still lacking many quotas.
