“Water Lily Pond” by French artist Claude Monet sold for $74 million.
According to The Value, the price includes taxes and fees, at the auction organized by Christie's New York on November 10. The oil painting was created between 1917 and 1919, measuring 100x200 cm. When Claude Monet (1840-1926) passed away, Michel Monet - his son and first wife - inherited the work, then the painting passed through the hands of several collectors. For about 100 years, the painting has never been exhibited or publicly appeared on the market.

The water lily pond is located in the grounds of Claude Monet’s house in Giverny, France. The artist planted trees such as rhododendrons, Japanese apples, and cherry trees around the pond. The beautiful garden became Claude Monet’s “separate world ” and was the subject of many of his works.

Claude Monet's paintings are mostly expensive, in 2018, a water lily was hammered by Christie's for nearly 85 million USD. The record for the most expensive painting by Claude Monet belongs to Meules, bought by German billionaire Hasso Plattner for 110 million USD.
Claude Monet was born in 1840 in Paris, France, the second son of a family of businessmen. As a teenager, Monet drew caricatures and then became a student of the famous painter Eugéne Boudin. Monet was a pioneer painter who founded the French Impressionist school. In 86 years, Monet created 2,000 paintings, many of which were done in his garden. In 1912, Monet suffered from cataracts and his health was failing, but he continued to work. The artist died in 1926 of lung cancer.
