The Fujian aircraft carrier was first introduced to the public in June 2022. The ship is a product completely completed domestically from design to manufacturing.
This new generation carrier is larger and more technologically advanced than the Shandong, which entered service in 2019, and the Liaoning, which was purchased from Ukraine in 1998.
According to images posted on Chinese state television on January 2, the Fujian train was towed by a smaller train with all three tracks of the electromagnetic catapult system visible on the ship's deck.
The TV station quoted a local officer as saying the ship would soon be put into readiness.
The Fujian has been undergoing several tests, including docking tests before sea trials. In November 2023, the carrier began testing its electromagnetic catapult system, the Global Times reported.
The Fujian will be the only aircraft carrier in the world equipped with the latest electromagnetic aircraft launch system (EMALS), more advanced than the US Navy's nuclear-powered Ford-class aircraft carriers.
China’s version of EMALS can launch more types of aircraft from its deck than the Shandong or Liaoning, and is also more energy efficient. This military technology marks a milestone in the modernization of the Chinese military.
