China unveils first design of lunar landing astronaut suit

DNVN - Over the weekend, the China Manned Space Administration (CMSA) introduced for the first time the design of the spacesuit for the lunar landing mission, and called on the public to contribute ideas for the name of this suit.

At the third Spacesuit Technology Forum, hosted by the China Astronaut Research and Training Center in Chongqing, the suit was prominently displayed in white with red stripes.

The red stripes on the upper body are inspired by the ribbons of the "Flying Apsara" fairies in Dunhuang art, while the lower body of the suit bears the image of flames when launching rockets.

According to the video released by CMSA, this spacesuit is made from materials that can protect against the lunar environment of heat radiation and dust. The suit is also equipped with an easy-to-operate multi-function integrated control panel, along with a camera that supports recording images from close and far distances.

In addition, the suit features flexible gloves, a panoramic anti-glare visor, and joints designed to adapt to low-gravity environments. Thanks to its lightweight overall design, the suit is suitable for activities on the lunar surface.

During the performance, astronauts Zhai Zhigang and Wang Yaping wore spacesuits and performed various movements such as walking, squatting, bending, kneeling on one leg and climbing ladders.

Li Meng, an expert from the China Astronaut Research and Training Center, said that the development of spacesuits for lunar landing missions began in 2020. The goal is to create lightweight, compact, highly reliable and safe spacesuits, thereby achieving many important technological breakthroughs.

China's first and second generations of Feitian spacesuits have assisted 17 astronauts in completing 17 space missions, making important contributions to the construction and operation of the country's space station.

Notably, astronaut Zhai Zhigang made history by becoming the first Chinese person to walk in space during the Shenzhou-7 mission. He was also a crew member of the Shenzhou-13 mission.

Meanwhile, Ms. Wang Yaping participated in the Shenzhou-10 and Shenzhou-13 missions, and became the first female astronaut to set foot on China's space station.

The announcement of the spacesuit design marks an important step forward for China in preparing for future crewed missions to the Moon.
