From November 3, 2025, Vietnam Airlines will charge for excess carry-on baggage.

(CT) - Vietnam Airlines has just announced that from November 3, 2025, it will collect fees for carry-on baggage exceeding the standard at the boarding gate.

According to regulations, the airline will charge a fee if the passenger's hand luggage violates one of the following conditions: exceeding the maximum weight by 10kg (for economy/premium economy class) or 18kg (for business class); carrying more than the specified number of pieces (one piece and one accessory for economy class; two pieces and one accessory for business class); exceeding the standard dimensions: 56x36x23cm (for luggage) and 40x30x15cm (for accessories). In case the luggage exceeds the standards but is still accepted for transport, the fee will be applied equivalent to one checked baggage, even one bulky piece (if both weight and size exceed).

A representative of Vietnam Airlines said that the new regulation aims to ensure operational safety, balance the load and improve the passenger experience. The airline noted that even if the baggage meets the standards, the airline can still require passengers to check it in (free of charge) if the luggage compartment is limited, especially on small-body ATR72 aircraft (standard 7kg).

According to information on the Vietnam Airlines website, the price of additional baggage purchased at the airport for domestic flights in Vietnam ranges from 600,000 VND/piece (assuming that checked baggage purchased at the airport for the Ho Chi Minh City - Hanoi route is about 600,000 VND/piece of 23kg). For international flights, the fee will be converted to USD, depending on the route and region. Passengers can pay by credit card, debit card or cash, depending on conditions at the departure airport.

Currently, Vietnam Airlines still maintains the free carry-on baggage standards including business class: two pieces (total weight not exceeding 18kg) and one accessory; economy/premium economy class: one piece (maximum 10kg) and one accessory. Total weight not exceeding 10kg.
